Extra Dirty Cocktail Club opens in Boston
By Rupert HohwielerA new cocktail concept has opened in the North End neighbourhood of Boston, Massachusetts, called Extra Dirty.

The venue comes from the team behind the nine-seater bar Farmacia, also located in Boston, and is located within the group’s recently-opened Italian restaurant and cocktail lounge Red Fox.
Extra Dirty is hidden behind a curtain at the back of the restaurant in a discreet space that calls back to the American Revolution, fitted with serpentine sofas, gold mirrors, and animal prints on the walls. All together, the space holds 20 seats.
Extra Dirty’s concept follows a fixed-priced format where guests pay US$90 per person for a ticket and receive an aperitivo (a daily rotating porthole infusion), multiple cocktail courses, and a selection of small plates, such as beef meatballs and handmade pasta.
The bar explained the idea eliminates the ‘transactional nature often found in dining and drinking experiences’ and also enables guests to enjoy the moment without having to think about the ‘order, pay, repeat cycle’ that comes with à la carte drinking and dining.
The menu will change seasonally, with each new drinks list based on a different region’s concepts and spirits.

‘Act one’ starts off as a tour of Italy, which is also a tribute to North End’s history as an Italian neighbourhood.
Bar director Phillip Rolfe said: “We wanted to start Extra Dirty with a nod to the North End neighbourhood, taking guests on a journey through Italy’s rich food culture while applying modern and complex production processes that guests have become accustomed to at Farmacia.
“By combining classic Italian flavours in new and innovative ways, I think we’re creating something that is simultaneously timeless and fresh. It’s impossible to achieve the highest quality result if you don’t start with the highest quality base materials. Time spent sourcing the right product is a huge part of what we do.”
As such, the lineup of cocktails is laced with Italian themes and ingredients. For instance, a cocktail called the Pomdoro E Funghi uses mushroom-infused amontillado Sherry alongside Rey Campero Espadìn mezcal, as well as toasted tomato syrup, red pepper and lemon.
The Uva E Parmigiano combines Citadelle’s Jardin D-ete gin expression with citrus oil, green grape soda, thyme tincture and parm foam, while the Arancia Rossa E Pepe brings a summer touch with a serrano pepper-infused Tequila, blood orange syrup, and Campari granita.
In a nod to the bar’s name, the menu features a Dirty Martini made with Ketel One vodka, basil, raw garlic, olive and pasta cheese blend, while for the after dinner treat, or ‘dolce’, guests can indulge in an Espresso Martini made with Ketel One, creme de caocao, Italian dark chocolate, vanilla and dark roast espresso.
Visits to Extra Dirty Cocktail Club are limited to 110 minutes.
Along with Extra Dirty, other new additions the world of bars this month include Cinco and Câv in London, and Baptist Street Rec Club in Sydney.
