Green River 1885 created with bartenders in mind
By Ted SimmonsThe new Bourbon, named after the year Green River was founded, is proofed and priced to cater to on-premise bar programs.

Green River Distilling is looking to further its reputation of delivering value alongside quality with a new whiskey designed for mixing. Green River 1885 Kentucky Straight Bourbon has a mashbill of 76% corn, 15% rye, and 9% malted barley, and is aged for a minimum of four years.
“Green River 1885 was blended with classic cocktails in mind, and is the ideal combination of flavour and value,” said national brand ambassador Caryn Wells.
“Like all Green River products, we honour our history while presenting Bourbons that are relevant to what and how people drink today. It’s awfully easy to say on your next cocktail order, ‘make mine an 85.”
Bottled at 42.5% ABV, 1885 will be available exclusively in one-litre bottles for US$22. It will initially be available this August in nine markets, including Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Tennessee, Michigan, Texas, Maryland, Delaware and the District of Columbia.
On the nose, the whiskey shows hints of almond and orange peel alongside cinnamon. On the palate, there is lightly spiced oak and clove.
Green River was founded in 1885 by J W McCulloch and is the 10th oldest distillery in Kentucky. In July 2022, Bardstown Bourbon Company purchased the Owensboro distillery for an undisclosed sum. Since then, the brand has introduced a core range of whiskies consisting of a Bourbon, a wheated Bourbon and, as of January, a rye.
The new whiskey comes on the heels of Full Proof, released in June, which the brand says sold a year’s forecast in under a month.
