Penderyn Distillery invests £1m in increasing production
By Tom Bruce-GardyneThe Penderyn distillery in South Wales has just announced plans to invest almost £1m in increasing its production capacity.
Penderyn is investing £1m in installing a new still at its Wales distillerySince Penderyn opened and released its first whisky in 2004, it has survived on a solitary pot still, producing spirit at a UK industry high of 92% abv, at a rate of one cask a day.
With the investment a new still will be added this August, followed by a double pot still in January next year.
Once the new stills are up and running, production is expected to increase to 500,000 bottles a year.
Stephen Davies, Penderyn’s MD, called it a “significant milestone” for the business, and said it would help “grow the distillery into a company which sells single malt whisky all over the world”.
“We’re already well distributed in the UK and are investing in new markets such as France and Ger
many, but expect to expand further throughout Europe. We have ambitions to explore further possibilities in North America and Asia on completion of the expansion project,” he added.
The new stills will also allow Penderyn to experiment and create new expressions of its single malt.
A special edition whisky, made to celebrate Swansea City’s entry into the English Premier League, was named European Whisky of the Year in Jim Murray’s 2013 Whisky Bible.
