Welsh whisky named “European whisky of the year”

A special edition whisky produced at Penderyn Distillery has been named “European Whisky of the Year” by top whisky expert Jim Murray.

A single cask Penderyn whisky has been voted the “European whisky of the Year” by Jim Murray

The single cask, single malt whisky, is produced on the Brecon Beacons and was named as the award winner in the 2013 edition of The Whisky Bible, written by Murray.

The whisky was made to celebrate Swansea City’s entry into the English Premier League and only 256 bottles were produced.

Stephen Davies, managing director of Penderyn, said: “Being chosen as an award winner in the prestigious “Whisky Bible” is another huge achievement for Penderyn and is recognition of a new and innovative single malt that celebrates a wonderful Welsh sporting success.”

The whisky, bottled at cask strength (59.7%abv) is described as having a “rich aroma of dried fruits, sultanas, juicy raisins, even dried apricots laced with hints of toasty oak”.

Murray said: “It seems fitting that with Swansea City becoming synonymous with elegant football, the country’s whisky should match it stride for stride. This was a worthy and memorable winner.”
