One third of UK drinkers opt for low-and-no

Almost one in three UK consumers choose low- or no-alcohol drinks on a semi-regular basis, a YouGov survey revealed.

In December 2021, an online survey of 2,079 UK-based respondents showed that 32% of drinkers said they ‘often’ or ‘sometimes’ choose to drink low-and-no alcohol products.

The YouGov poll was commissioned by alcohol watchdog the Portman Group, and collected findings from 14 to 15 December 2021.

Matt Lambert, CEO of the Portman Group, said: “As these positive findings show, there has been a big increase in drinking low-and-no during the pandemic, indicating that many UK drinkers have looked to moderate their alcohol consumption by swapping with non-alcoholic options.

“These figures show the fruits of large industry innovation and investment into the sector over the past decade to provide consumers with an array of lower-alcohol options.”

The number of people who semi-regularly consume low- and no-alcohol has increased since 2020, when only one in four were opting for these drinks, according to a Portman Group survey.

A fifth of those who tried low-and-no products say they are more likely to drink these alternatives now, compared to a year ago.

Twenty-two percent cited health reasons for their choice of beverages with lower alcohol content, while 20% said it was a decision made to enable socialising without drinking excessively.

One third said they participated in low-and-no drinking to enable them to drive home from social events.

More than a quarter (26%) of those who are drinking low-and-no products have revealed that their overall alcohol consumption had gone down.

Welsh drinkers were revealed to be the most likely consumers of low-and-no drinks, with 36% opting for the products on semi-regular basis in the survey.

The total volume consumption of low-and-no products is predicted to increase by 31% by 2024, in 10 countries that represent more than 75% of the global low-and-no alcohol consumption, according to IWSR Drinks Market Analysis.

These countries include Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, South Africa, Spain, the UK and the US.
