Captain Morgan asks for change in Constitution

In a bid to further align itself with millennial drinkers, Captain Morgan rum has launched a campaign petitioning the US government to allow under 35s to have the opportunity to be president.

Captain Morgan is asking for the US Constitution to be changed to allow under 35s to have the chance of becoming President

The brand has launched a petition for Article II, Section I of the United States Constitution to be changed as it states that ““neither shall any person be eligible to [the office of President] who shall not have attained to the age of thirty-five years”.

Captain Morgan argues that millennials have replaced baby boomers as the “most populous and most influential generation”, with more than 75.4 million in the US alone.

A survey conducted by Taylor Global Taylor for Captain Morgan brand owner Diageo, surveying the views of 1.034 adults, revealed that 52% of 21 to 34-year-olds believe lowering the presidential age requirement would be beneficial for the country.

Meanwhile, 56% of those polled said they would be willing to support an amendment to lower the age requirement.

“It’s no secret that Millennials have gradually been disengaging from the political process,” said Adrienne Cuschieri Grooms, 33-year-old senior brand manager at Captain Morgan

“The fact that there are very few elected Under 35s on Capitol Hill is symbolic of this disengagement, and bringing more young adults into the democratic system can only make our nation better.

“It’s not like we’re trying to create change for the sake of change.  This is a very real and important issue.  Millennials make up some of the most progressive, innovative, intelligent, and successful people in our country – why shouldn’t they be able to be President of the United States?”

Elliot Sanchez, 29-year old CEO and Founder of mSchool, an education technology company that creates new distributed learning technologies, was the first person to sign Captain Morgan’s petition.

Captain Morgan has created the under35potus.com page to generate support for the campaign. The site will redirect visitors to ‘We the People’ on petitions.whitehouse.gov.

If the petition receives 100,000 signatures by 17 August 2016 the White House will review the petition, distribute it to appropriate policy officials and issue a response.

Earlier this year, a complaint against the logo of Captain Morgan rum was dismissed by UK industry watchdog the Portman Group.
