‘World’s first’ gin diploma launches in Edinburgh

The Edinburgh Whisky Academy has expanded its course offerings with the addition of the ‘world’s first’ gin diploma and a new online whisky course.

The Edinburgh Whisky Academy has launched its Diploma in Gin, the academy’s first non-whisky course

Following increased demand for its courses and a rising consumer interest in gin, the Edinburgh Whisky Academy has launched its first non-whisky course – a diploma in gin.

The one-day course, which will launch on 19 April, will be delivered by author and gin expert Geraldine Coates, who will offer an “educational, insightful and interactive journey into the wonderful world of gin”.

The diploma, which will also feature expert knowledge from a guest distiller, includes six modules that cover the history of gin, the current gin renaissance, definitions of gin, distillation, sensory and cocktails.

Kirsty McKerrow, founder of the Edinburgh Whisky Academy, said: “Following the success of our accredited single malt diploma, we recognised the need for additional education options and approaches, which led us to the creation of these new courses for 2018.

“Our courses are designed to provide learning and knowledge, gleaned from leading industry experts, and give those interested in whisky and gin access to excellent practical insight to improve their own journey, whilst having fun and achieving a valuable qualification.”

The academy’s expanded course offering also includes a new online Introduction to Whisky Certificate, which provides insight into the fundamentals of whisky.

The online course requires 10 hours of study and covers modules including story of whisky, whisky today, what makes whisky, how whisky is made, why wood and time are so important and the final product.

The Edinburgh Whisky Academy recently announced plans to bring its single malt Scotch diploma to London.
