Single malt Scotch diploma launches in London

The Edinburgh Whisky Academy is bringing its single malt Scotch diploma to London – thought to be the first independent vocational qualification of its kind.

The Edinburgh Whisky Academy is offering a Single Malt Diploma course in London in March

Following “positive” feedback from London-based consumers, the academy is launching a two-day Diploma course at the Caledonian Club at Hyde Park Corner on 12 and 13 March.

The Diploma in Single Malt Whisky covers seven modules, including the history of whisky, business of whisky, raw materials, batch distillation, maturation, world whiskies, and sensory.

The Diploma in Single Malt Whisky is held six times a year in Edinburgh with three more courses to be launched over the next three months.

Formed in 2015, the Edinburgh Whisky Academy has been accredited by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA), and was set up as an independent centre of learning for the Scotch whisky industry.

Over the last 15 months, the academy has trained brand ambassadors, blenders, sommeliers, bar managers and enthusiasts.

The Academy will also deliver an Introduction to Whisky Certificate, available to take online, as well as a one-day Art of Tasting Diploma this spring.

Commenting on the expansion of the academy’s portfolio, founder Kirsty McKerrow, said: “Following the success of our accredited Single Malt Diploma, we recognised the need for additional education options and approaches, which led us to the creation of the new online certificate.

“This addition enables people to learn the fundamentals of whisky in the most accessible, flexible and fun way, whilst achieving an SQA accredited certificate. Our course is designed to provide learning and knowledge, gleaned from leading industry experts, and give those interested in whisky some excellent practical insight to improve their own journey.”
