New Scotch whisky cask goes on sale for £1m
By Amy HopkinsThe Annandale Distillery, which recently restarted production after lying dormant for almost 100 years, is selling its first cask of Scotch whisky for £1 million.
Annandale Distillery has put its first cask of Scotch whisky on the market for £1mIt was revealed in November that the Dumfriesshire-based distillery, once owned by Johnnie Walker, had filled its first cask in 95 years after receiving multi-million pound investment.
Having restored the distillery, which had fallen into disrepair, new owners David Thomson and his wife Teresa Church, lined up the launch of two single malt Scotch whisky labels: the Man O’ Sword, inspired by King Robert the Bruce, and Man O’Words, inspired by Scottish poet Robert Burns, both of which will be available by the bottle from early 2018.
However the distillery has now put its first cask of Man O’Words whisky – a 2nd-fill American white oak Bourbon cask – on the market for £1m in the hope of generating interest from whisky investors around the globe.
Annandale has launched the cask as part of its Private Cask Owners programme, whereby a further 38 Man O’Words cask and 35 Man O’Swords casks will be made available at a starting price of £100,000.
Man O’Words is described as a “complex, smooth and mellow” whisky. Those who buy a full cask will be presented with a personalised Annandale Distillery Cask Owner’s Certificate, while the whisky itself will be allowed to mature in Annandale’s warehouse for 10 years where it will be tended by the distillery team.
After 10 years, Annandale’s master distiller will advise the owner when the cask is ready for bottling.
“The price tag is high, reflecting that this is a once in a lifetime opportunity for someone to become a part of Scottish history,” Thomson told the Times.
In July last year, a full cask of The Macallan Scotch whisky set a new world record for the most expensive cask of whisky sold at auction was it was bought for nearly HK$2m.
