Boutique-y intros gin with botanicals sent into space

Newly formed That Boutique-y Gin Company has launched a gin made exclusively with botanicals that have been sent into space, as well as moon rock from a lunar meteorite.

Moonshot Gin contains juniper, coriander, cubeb pepper, fresh lemon peel, camomile flowers, cardamom, dried bitter orange peel, cinnamon, liquorice root and angelica – all of which were sent into the stratosphere at an altitude of at least 24km, where they were “exposed to extremely low pressures”.

Batch one of Moonshot Gin is a release of 1,000 bottles. Its botanicals were sent into space on 7 March – see the video of their journey below.

That Boutique-y Gin Company, formed by the team behind That Boutique-y Whisky Company in February this year, is thought to be the world’s first independent gin bottler.

The group follows in the footsteps of a number of companies that have released space-inspired spirits in recent years. Earlier this year, London bar Mr Fogg’s Residence teamed up with food and drink innovation group Bompas & Parr to create the “world’s first” space-aged Negroni.

Meanwhile, Ardbeg sent vials of new make spirit and shards of casks to the International Space Station in 2011 to test the impact of zero-gravity on whisky maturation. The vials returned in 2015 with “groundbreaking” results.
