Nicoya sets eyes on New York Rum Festival
By Miona MadsenLes Bienheureux-owned Nicoya Ron de Costa Rica rum is continuing to expand its presence in the US after debuting at the Miami Rum Congress in February.

Nicoya is gaining momentum in the US by tagging along with The Rum Lab’s festivals, starting in Miami, and then attending the Chicago Rum Festival last month.
The brand’s next stop will be the New York Rum Festival, hosted by The Rum Lab at the Metropolitan Pavilion in Manhattan on 6 June.
Nicoya’s expansion plans in the US are said to reflect consumers’ growing interest in boutique spirits.
Claiming to be the first single-estate rum produced entirely in Costa Rica, Nicoya is a venture by Alexandre Sirech, the CEO and co-founder of Les Bienheureux. Before his current position, he served as the president of Havana Club Rum at Pernod Ricard.
For decades, rum production in Costa Rica was limited by a state monopoly that prohibited private companies from distilling alcohol in the country. However, Nicoya broke this barrier by forming a joint venture with the Taboga sugar mill. This partnership led to the establishment of Costa Rica’s first independent rum distillery in 2022.
The brand enjoys complete control over its production process, overseeing everything from sugarcane cultivation to ageing.
It incorporates three unique rum-making traditions: pure cane juice, cane honey, and molasses.
Under the management of cellar master Olivier Dumont, Nicoya’s production employs hybrid stills and features tropical ageing in ex-Bourbon barrels, where the annual evaporation rate surpasses 10%.
At the New York Rum Festival, the brand will host its signature masterclass on 6 June starting at 2:45pm, offering trade professionals and investors a chance to experience the rum firsthand.
Due to previous sell-out events, early registration is recommended for industry stakeholders.
