Ukrainian perspective: Mikolasch Vodka

As the vodka category seeks renewed authenticity and differentiation, Mikolasch is expanding into new international markets while promoting Ukraine’s historic role as one of the spirit’s original heartlands.

Mikolasch Vodka, acquired by the heritage spirits group Origen X, champions a terroir‐led philosophy that utilises single‐farm grains grown in Ukraine’s black earth soil and pure water from the Carpathian Mountains. The brand’s commitment to provenance and transparency aims to attract distributors seeking distinctive vodka options.

Mikolasch is already trading with Canadian markets, including the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) and the British Columbia Liquor Distribution Branch (BCLDB). Ontario alone consumes an estimated 12 million‐ 15m litres of vodka per year. In comparison, British Columbia accounts for an additional 5m‐6m litres, making both provinces key entry points for premium spirits in Canada.

In Eastern Europe, Mikolasch has secured a new distribution agreement with Selected Brands in Bulgaria, a significant vodka market with annual consumption estimated at 18m‐ 25m litres. The market also serves as a strategic gateway to the wider Balkan region.

Velislava Stamova, owner and CEO of Selected Brands, states: “Vodka is the second‐largest spirits category by volume in our market, but true differentiation is rare. Mikolasch Vodka brings a refreshing sense of heritage, transparency, and origin that will help redefine how consumers perceive the category.”

Beyond Europe, Origen X is exploring opportunities across Central Asia, including Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan – markets where vodka remains the dominant spirit. Combined annual consumption in the region is estimated at 90m‐150m litres, representing significant long‐term potential for premium brands with strong provenance.

The vodka brand has also renewed distribution agreements across the Black Sea region, including Turkey, Georgia, and Armenia. According to Origen X, many partners who initially trialled Mikolasch are now expanding their distribution after strong early results.

Portfolio expansion

The company is preparing for the official market release of Mikolasch Organic, which has already undergone preliminary screenings with distributors and trade partners in the UK and Europe.

According to Origen X CEO Zak Oganian, early partner feedback has been extremely positive, as he explains: “Our partners see Mikolasch Organic as a clear point of differentiation in a crowded vodka category. It reinforces the brand’s craft credentials while demonstrating that authenticity, origin, transparency, and, above all, taste are critical – perhaps more than ever.”

Later this year, the company plans a potential pre‐release of Mikolasch Cuvée, a limited edition positioned above the current range. Cuvée will be produced by blending selected single‐farm distillates, combining different grain varieties and harvest profiles to create a more layered and expressive vodka style. The expression aims to elevate vodka into the realm of blended fine spirits, celebrating origin and craftsmanship rather than simply neutrality.

Mikolasch has reported double‐digit month‐on‐month growth throughout 2025 and into early 2026, with the UK emerging as one of its fastest‐growing premium markets, working with distributor Nightcap Brands. Despite supply challenges related to logistics in Ukraine, demand has remained strong, with several markets experiencing short‐term stock shortages as distribution expands.

For Origen X, Mikolasch’s expansion signifies a broader objective: restoring Ukraine’s place in the global vodka conversation. Although the country is widely recognised as one of the historic birthplaces of vodka, Ukrainian producers remain significantly underrepresented on the international stage. Through Mikolasch, Origen X seeks to reintroduce Ukrainian vodka as a category defined by terroir, provenance, and craft production.
