Pound & Penny Spirits platform hopes to attract category-exclusive premium brand partnerships

The new platform is aimed at premium spirits brands looking for strategic commercial growth and brand management.

The launch represents a significant advancement for Virginia Distillery Co, which has established a national reputation for its American single malt whisky.

With Pound & Penny Spirits, the company will utilise its commercial infrastructure and brand-building expertise to support select partner brands that are committed to authenticity and quality.

Andrew Meissner, chief commercial officer at Virginia Distillery Co, said: “Over the past several years, we’ve built a best-in-class commercial organisation within the growing American single malt category. Pound & Penny allows us to extend that capability beyond our own distillery, partnering with exceptional brands that deserve strong strategic execution in the US market and beyond.”

The launch of Pound & Penny highlights Virginia Distillery Co’s ambition to create a scalable premium spirits platform.

While the distillery continues to focus on its core American single malt whisky portfolio, the new division will allow the organisation to thoughtfully diversify into complementary categories.

The newly established incubator offers comprehensive services, including national sales management, distributor strategy and oversight, pricing structure, national account development, feet-on-the-ground selling, and complete marketing planning.

The Pound & Penny portfolio is actively seeking exclusive premium brand partnerships in the US, with a focus on Bourbon, gin, rum, and international whiskies.

Several discussions with potential partners are reportedly already in progress.

Founding partner

The first brand to join the platform is Cierto, an additive-free Tequila crafted from 100% estate-grown Blue Weber agave in Jalisco, Mexico.

Cierto Tequila, as the incubator’s founding partner brand, is said to represent ‘the uncompromising craftsmanship’ that Pound & Penny aims to promote.

Meissner explained: “Cierto represents exactly the type of brand we want to partner with: uncompromising on liquid quality, heritage-driven, and built for the long term, but ready for more strategic commercial scale.”

Cierto, meaning ‘true’ in Spanish, is made by fourth- and fifth-generation agaveros who use estate-grown Highlands agave and follow regenerative farming practices.

The brand’s Tequilas are copper pot-distilled and aged in French Limousin oak casks. Its range includes blanco, reposado, añejo, and extra añejo expressions.

Evan Aldrich, co-founder of Cierto, said: “Cierto has always stood for purity, time, and truth in Tequila. With Pound & Penny, we’ve found a partner that respects the integrity of our product and understands how to build a luxury brand with discipline.

“Together, we’re focused on expanding distribution the right way, protecting the craftsmanship while accelerating thoughtful growth.”

Last year, Virginia Distillery Co established the American Custom Distilling Group to offer full-service contract distillation across whiskey styles.
