Yellowstone Bourbon revives historic bottle

Kentucky’s Yellowstone Bourbon has given its Recollection expression, inspired by back bar bottles from the 1800s, a wider release in the US.

The Recollection Bourbon takes after the brand’s oldest decanters that stood on the back bars of saloons and restaurants in the Yellowstone area in the late 1800s.

It was initially released as an exclusive for Limestone Branch Distillery, where Yellowstone Bourbon is produced, but has now been made available at select liquor retailers nationwide in the US.

The Bourbon is aged for eight years and bottled at 55% ABV (110 proof) and non-chill filtered.

The bottle design is based on the brand’s earliest bar back bottles that were hand-painted and features the Lower Falls of Yellowstone Park on the label.

Stephen Beam, master distiller at Limestone Branch Distillery, said: “When I brought Yellowstone to Limestone Branch in 2015, it wasn’t just about reviving a name, it was about honouring the people who gave this Bourbon its meaning.

“Our bottles have always drawn inspiration from the spirit and natural beauty of Yellowstone National Park, and when you hold this bottle, I hope it captures the sense of history, craftsmanship, and awe that makes both the park and this Bourbon so special.”

Yellowstone Recollection Bourbon’s profile is described as opening with classic Kentucky Bourbon notes of vanilla crème brûlée and dark cherry on the nose, which are then followed by flavours of caramel, butterscotch, and hints of charred oak on the palate.

Its finish has grain and mocha alongside the brand’s distinctive cherry character and warm spice, including sweet cinnamon candy.

The 700ml bottle is available for US$69.99.

Last year Yellowstone marked its 10th anniversary and entered the ready-to-drink category with a trio of bottled Bourbon cocktails, which Beam discussed with The Spirits Business.

Yellowstone is part of MGP Ingredients’ portfolio, following its US$475 million acquisition of parent firm Luxco in 2021.

MGP’s third-quarter sales slid by 19% with distilling revenue nearly halved.
