Mount Gay relaunches Silver expression
By Rupert HohwielerBarbados distillery Mount Gay is aiming to appeal to bartenders with an updated version of its premium Silver rum, which has been introduced to US and UK markets.

Having initially launched in 2008 as Eclipse Silver, master blender Trudiann Branker redeveloped Mount Gay’s white rum recipe in 2020.
The liquid is made from a blend of pot and column still rums, differing from typical white rum production that tends to utilise column still only.
Branker used an unaged rum for the column still component, and blended that with a rum aged for two years in former American whiskey casks for the pot still portion. To achieve a crystal clear profile, she then used a double-filtration process though charcoal that removed the liquid’s caramel colouring.
No sugar is added in the process, with the flavour coming solely from the raw ingredients, pure molasses, and cask ageing.
Mount Gay Silver’s profile features citrus, pineapple and toffee on the nose, with grapefruit, butterscotch and cane on the palate.
The redeveloped recipe is intended to elevate a range of white rum cocktails for mixology, including its signature serve the Mojito.
Alongside its US arrival, where it has a 40% ABV, Mount Gay Silver is also being re-released in the UK with an ABV of 37.5%. It will be available in both the on-trade and via The Whisky Exchange, priced at £25 (US$33).
Branker commented: “Mount Gay Silver is a classic I deeply cherish, rooted in the heart of Barbados and the Caribbean. I’m thrilled to see our beloved white rum launch in the UK on-trade, empowering bartenders to elevate white rum cocktails and extending our authentic island craft to even broader horizons.”
Last month, the Rémy Cointreau-owned brand also released the latest expressions in its Single Estate Series.
