Kabuki-inspired bar Netsu opens in Dubai
By Lauren BowesNetsu, a cocktail bar inspired by a classical form of Japanese theatre, has opened at the Mandarin Oriental Jumeira hotel in Dubai.

Like a Kabuki production, the menu is divided into acts that build in intensity. Each section features four cocktails, two of which are non-alcoholic.
The first act is Jo (序), or The Prologue, intended to be a ‘calm beginning that invites relaxation and sparks anticipation’. Highlights include the Reverberation of Koto, a bright and floral Spritz made with Ketel One Citroen, genmaicha, yuzushu, pear, salted honey and citrus vapour. For a non-alcoholic option, Dance on the Clouds blends oolong, camomile, citrus cordial and pink grapefruit soda.
The second act, Ha (破) – The Evolution, features the Ghost Light, a Sour inspired by the supernatural presence that lingers in the shadows of a Kabuki stage. The cocktail features Maker’s Mark, umeshu, Lapsang Souchong, coconut and butterfly pea.
Meanwhile, the third section is Kyu (急) – The Climax, where the menu reaches a dramatic crescendo. Drinks here include the Midnight Hanamachi, named after the Kabuki stage’s walkway. The cocktail combines Los Siete Misterios Doba-Yej, coffee bean, pineapple, cardamom and straw smoke.

The menu closes with Kiri (切) – The Final Act, where flavours soften. The Final Bow, for instance, combines Rémy Martin VSOP, Netsu cold brew, Pedro Ximénez, coffee liqueur, coconut and tonka beans.
Netsu Bar also offers rare Japanese spirits, such as whisky, shochu and awamori, and focuses on seasonal ingredients.
A seasonal tea and speciality coffee programme is available, honouring Japan’s traditions,
The bar will host a curated lineup of DJs, whose music will mirror the four acts of the menu, with lighting to match.
Japan was also the inspiration for another new bar opening this week: Yume in Hong Kong.
