Dutch Barn Ginger Spice supports donkeys

Ricky Gervais-backed English vodka Dutch Barn has released its latest flavour, Ginger Spice, with part of the proceeds going to a donkey sanctuary.

Dutch Barn
The Ginger Spice vodka is described as ‘fiery and full of flavour’, and designed for making mixology easy

The 38% ABV ginger spiced vodka is made with natural ingredients and is recommended in a signature serve dubbed the ‘The Lazy Donkey’, which is labelled by the brand as a ‘spicy and easy-to-make take on the classic Mule’.

It is made by pouring 50ml of Ginger Spiced vodka over ice, then topped with ginger beer and lime (‘if you can be bothered’, the brand jokes).

For every bottle sold, 25% of the profits will also go to The Donkey Sanctuary, a donkey welfare charity which provides safe and free sanctuaries for rescued donkeys to roam, as well as vet care and training in countries where donkeys are working animals.

Dutch Barn Ginger Spiced Vodka is available exclusively on the brand’s website for a price of £32 (US$42). It is intended for making bar-quality cocktails with ‘zero faff’.

Chris Fraser, founder and CEO of Ellers Farm Distillery, the home of Dutch Barn, detailed: “We’re delighted to support the phenomenal care The Donkey Sanctuary provides for these hardworking, incredible animals.

“Like so many people, we love great cocktails, but everyone is just so exhausted these days. With Ginger Spiced, we’ve taken all the effort out. The ‘Lazy Donkey’ serve is perfect for people who just need to sometimes be lazy and to honour our collaboration with The Donkey Sanctuary.

“All you need to do is simply pour over ice, add ginger beer and some lime if you fancy, sit back and enjoy an amazing cocktail and a laugh with your friends, knowing that every sip is also helping real donkeys.”

Fraser believes there is a ‘big opportunity’ for flavoured vodka‘, so long as it isn’t made with artificial flavours.

The rest of the brand’s flavoured range includes Black Cherry, Mediterranean Citrus and Balinese Vanilla, plus a British raspberry variant that launched this summer.

Drinking vodka and saving donkeys

Spiced Ginger debuted on Wednesday (3 October), the same day as the grand final of Dutch Barn’s The Spirit of Comedy contest.

The winner of the competition will open for comedian and Ellers Farm co-owner Ricky Gervais at Wembley arena for his Mortality tour on 15 November.

Gervais, a vocal animal rights activist, added: “Drinking vodka and saving donkeys at the same time is an irresistible cocktail.”

Marianne Steele, CEO at The Donkey Sanctuary, meanwhile said of partnering with Dutch Barn: “This playful partnership will help fund vital projects worldwide, improving the lives of donkeys while strengthening the communities that rely on these remarkable animals.

“We think a better world for donkeys is a better world full stop. We recognised shared values with Ellers Farm from day one and were bowled over by their enthusiasm to help tell that story. And with donkeys known for having a soft spot for ginger and spice, it feels like the perfect fit.”

Dutch Barn, which launched in 2020 and is made with locally-sourced British apples and potato spirit, landed in the US this year.

Ellers Farm Distillery hopes to reach net zero by 2040.

Located in Yorkshire, England, the distillery secured full ownership of 6 O’Clock Gin in August.
