Virginia Distillery sales rise by 42%

American single malt producer Virginia Distillery Co (VDC) has reported an uptick in sales for the first half of 2025.

VDC exclusively distilled American single malt, with Courage & Conviction its flagship bottling

VDC’s recent growth was fuelled by domestic momentum, expanded export distribution, and a series of brewery collaborations.

Based in Lovingston, Virginia, VDC is a founding member of the American Single Malt Whiskey Commission and was one of the most vocal distillers in pressuring the TTB (Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau) to recognise American single malt as an official style.

In December 2024, after more than two years of consideration, the TTB released formal guidelines to go into effect the following January.

“This is a landmark year for American single malt,” CEO Gareth Moore said. “With the TTB finally recognising ASM [American single malt] as a distinct category, consumers and trade alike are showing more confidence — and curiosity — than ever before. This is playing out in both velocity and brand engagement.”

Moore has long maintained that formal guidelines would help retailers group ASM products together and help consumers understand what it is, which, without an official definition, had proven difficult.

The VDC portfolio includes flagship Courage & Conviction, as well as the newly introduced ASM line which features both core and limited offerings.

Among the limited offerings is the Brewer’s Coalition, which sees VDC’s whiskey finished in beer casks from Goose Island, Hardywood, and other well-known breweries.

The VDC ASM line has been a key driver of growth, with expressions priced at or around US$50. Alongside the new line, VDC debuted a newly designed bottle and website.

While US growth remains key, VDC has likewise expanded internationally, partnering with Maison Villevert in France, BevWorks in Poland, and DXCEL in Taiwan.

By the end of the year, VDC will have participated in trade shows in Singapore, London, Berlin, France and Mumbai.

“This isn’t a niche movement anymore,” Moore said. “The formal definition of American single malt is giving buyers, retailers, and consumers a clear framework. We’re finally speaking the same language – and it’s translating to interest and, ultimately, demand.”

In February, VDC announced that in addition to its own brands, the company would launch a contract distilling arm, known as American Custom Distilling.
