Please Don’t Tell duo open Mixteca in NYC
By Lauren BowesOne Cornelia is a multi-concept project in New York’s West Village, which welcomed an agave bar called Mixteca last week (19 August).

Jeff Bell and Victor Lopez – the team behind the city’s Please Don’t Tell speakeasy – are behind One Cornelia, which is located in a corner building at 1 Cornelia Street and West 4th. The project is their first new venture in nearly 20 years.

Mixteca joins taqueria Tacos 1986, which opens in July. Kees, a downstairs cocktail lounge, will follow in autumn.
The agave bar is an ‘ode’ to Lopez’s hometown of Puebla, Mexico. Its cocktail list is based around Tequila, mezcal, bacanora and raicilla and aims to showcase the versatility of the category.
For instance, the Vampiro combines reposado Tequila, sangrita, lime, Squirt, ‘adobada’ rub and chilli lime, while the Los Santos is made with palo santo-infused mezcal, Luxardo Bitter Bianco and blanc vermouth.
Meanwhile, the Machata features horchata, reposado Tequila, Pedro Ximénez, cinnamon and matcha.
For food, guests can order from the Tacos 1986 menu, with dishes served directly to their table.
The back bar features deep blue talavera tiles reminiscent of historic Mexican cantinas. Post Company worked with local NYC-based artist Violet Oliphant to create the hand-painted tiles, which feature flora and fauna patterns, landscapes and traditional insignias that echo the Puebla region’s famed pottery.
The bar’s stools are made from recycled agave plant fibres, while its banquettes are tucked beneath adobe-inspired arches.
Last month, Brooklyn welcomed another Mexico-inspired bar, Dolores.
