Clase Azul reinterprets mezcal-making for latest Tequila
Luxury producer Clase Azul has added a sixth Tequila to its portfolio, which is said to capture the essence of traditional mezcal-making.
Clase Azul Tequila Blanco Ahumado is described as an innovative expression of Tequila, which boasts a subtle touch of smoke that is ‘imbued with the essence of Los Altos de Jalisco’ – the home of Clase Azul México.
It has been crafted by cooking Blue agave cores in an oven with ancient origins; a pit dug into the ground and lit with firewood and volcanic rocks. The necessary heat required for cooking the agave is produced by the rocks, rather than the flames, which goes on to offer the resulting Tequila its delicately smoky profile.
The agave juice and fibres are brought together with Clase Azul’s proprietary yeast that was developed from wild varieties selected from the brand’s agave fields, after which the liquid is double distilled in custom-made copper stills.
Viridiana Tinoco, master distiller at Clase Azul México, shared the inspiration behind the new expression: “Looking to achieve a smoky profile for this Tequila, I set out to capture the essence of traditional mezcal-making, reinterpreting each stage of the process to elevate the unique character of the Blue agave, but this time through a deliberate act.”
This Tequila features aromatic notes of smoked agave, fresh plum and red apple, and boasts flavours of fresh lemon with a mineral front that gives way to a silky finish with smoky undertones.
The 700ml decanter for this expression stands out for its unique materials, which were chosen as reminders of the traditional methods employed in the making of the spirit.
The use of semi-opaque glass alludes to the smoke during the cooking process, while the texture of its dark ceramic base is a reference to the volcanic rocks that cook the agave cores. Meanwhile the cap and emblem, both copper in colour, are in homage to the stills used in the distillation of the Tequila.
Clase Azul Tequila Blanco Ahumado is bottled at 45% ABV, will be available in the UK at Selfridges from next week for RRP £325 (US$436).
Its inaugural release is presented in an exclusive case that celebrates its debut as Clase Azul’s ‘newest icon’.
In 2022, as part of its evolution from Clase Azul Spirits to Clase Azul México, the brand opened Clase Azul La Terraza Los Cabos in San José del Cabo, a luxury destination featuring a boutique, restaurant, and mixology at El Bar as well as an immersive gastronomic experience known as A Taste of Culture.
