Bladnoch celebrates heritage with Wave Day expression
Scotland’s southernmost whisky distillery Bladnoch has released the second single malt in its Wave Master Distiller’s Collection, The Wave II.

The second expression in the five-part limited edition series was revealed at a one-day festival on Saturday (14 June), otherwise known as Wave Day.
Wave Day is a celebration of the brand’s ‘bold’ Galloway spirit and the history and heritage of Bladnoch Distillery – the oldest privately-owned whisky distillery in Scotland, dating back to 1817.
Whisky enthusiasts in attendance were able to sample and purchase Wave II, which was exclusively available to acquire on the day ahead of remaining bottles going on sale through Bladnoch’s online shop yesterday (16 June).
Other highlights on the day included an interactive tasting of Wave II with Bladnoch’s master distiller, Dr Nick Savage, as well as a short, immersive theatre experience inspired by the distillery’s story, performed by Bladnoch’s UK brand ambassador, Mark Rannoch.
Furthermore, guests were able to extend their whisky experience on 15 June with a bespoke tour of the distillery, offering a deeper dive into Bladnoch’s craftsmanship and intricate whisky-making process.
Savage said: “Wave Day is one of the highlights of our calendar year, and it’s a privilege to host this festival of our bold Galloway spirit.
“This is a time to gather, celebrate and enjoy some incredible whisky, particularly Wave II – as we unveil the next instalment in our exciting annual release series.
“We look forward to welcoming Bladnoch fans from near and far through the distillery doors this summer, to discover more about how we make our exceptional single malt whisky.”
To craft the Wave series, Savage has explored the marrying process of whiskies, demonstrating the five pillars of whisky making that he uses.
To do this, five amontillado Sherry tuns have been filled with whiskies from various combinations of cask types to marry and be released annually, with each release of 1817 bottles focusing on a new pillar. The remaining whisky is decanted into the following year’s tun, creating a common thread throughout the series.
Wave II is presented at 57% ABV, and has been crafted to focus on the pillar of Distillery and Spirit Character.
This whisky boasts notes of pear drops, pineapples and ginger, and offers a floral and fresh finish with a hint of spice.
It retails at £125 (US$170) per bottle.
It follows the inaugural release in the series, The Wave I, which focused on the pillar of Time and Maturation, showcasing Bladnoch’s method of selecting casks at the peak time of the maturation process for optimal flavour.
