Planteray Sealander rum makes US debut

Maison Ferrand-owned Planteray has introduced its Sealander expression to the US market for the first time.

Sealander represents three rum-producing countries from the Atlantic, South Pacific, and Indian oceans in one bottle. The expression was first introduced outside the US under the brand’s former name, Plantation, in September 2023.

The expression blends rums from Stade’s West Indies Rum Distillery in Barbados, Saint Aubin Distillery in Mauritius, and Rum Co of Fiji Distillery. It now joins Planteray’s permanent range.

According to the brand, each bottle of Sealander “blends Planteray’s pioneering approach to rum-making with the distinctive qualities native to each island distillery”.

The brand’s owner and master blender, Alexandre Gabriel, created Sealander.

He said: “For more than 25 years, Planteray Rum barrels have sailed between the great rum-producing origins and France, to bring the finest rums to your bars and tables. Sealander honours this history – I am so excited to share it with you.”

The Fiji rum is said to be enhanced by the Pacific Ocean’s warm, tropical climate. The column-distilled spirit was aged in charred barrels for five years, resulting in chocolate, smoke, and fruit notes.

Maison Ferrand’s Stade’s West Indies Rum Distillery – which is located at Brighton Beach, facing the Caribbean Sea – produced the Barbados rum in the blend. The pot and column still rum was aged for up to eight years and features notes of vanilla and coconut, enhanced by the signature high ester characteristic of Barbadian rums.

The third rum was column-distilled at Mauritius’ Saint Aubin Distillery. The cane juice rum complements the blend with its grassy and herbal notes.

Planteray Sealander Rum displays aromas of pear, quince jelly, and gooseberry with hints of smoky molasses, followed by notes of clover honey, liquorice, beeswax, vanilla fudge, prune, cooked apple, tonka bean, and dried banana on the palate.

Sealander is bottled at 40% ABV, with a suggested retail price of US$44.

At The Rum and Cachaça Masters 2025, Planteray Sealander Rum won a Master medal.

Last year, the brand launched a Pedro Ximénez Sherry cask-finished version of its 20th Anniversary XO rum.
