Père Magloire bottles cask strength Calvados

French producer Père Magloire Calvados has released two rare cask strength single cask expressions, celebrating ‘the essence of Normandy’.

Père Magloire’s cellar master Jean-Luc Fossey crafted the new range. Both expressions have been drawn from a single barrel, highlighting the apple spirit’s versatility and terroir.

The eaux-de-vie undergoes a natural alcohol reduction process in the cask, with no water added before being bottled non-chill filtered, said to aid in maintaining the spirit’s full character.

The first of the new releases, a nine-year-old, is a double-distilled Calvados Pays d’Auge, which is aged alternately in French and European oak barrels.

Bottled at natural cask strength of 49.9% ABV, the aromatic expression displays notes of cooked apple, almonds, and dried fruits.

The older of the two releases was aged for 15 years in a single French oak barrel. Offered at 45.3% ABV, the Calvados offers aromas of cooked apples, hazelnuts, and blond tobacco, joined on the palate by notes of cocoa, spicy vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, candied orange zest, coffee, and toffee.

Père Magloire’s cask strength range aims to attract discerning brandy enthusiasts seeking to discover ‘the essence of Calvados’ with authenticity and refinement.

Available from select retailers, the new expressions are said to mark a new chapter of pushing boundaries and innovation for Père Magloire.

Père Magloire, established in 1821, is one of the oldest Calvados producers and celebrated its 200th anniversary in October 2021.

In July 2024, The Spirits Business discussed innovation with Calvados producers to gain insight into the category.
