Whiskey and cigar den opens in Montana

The Lone Mountain Ranch resort has launched The Trapper’s Den, a restored 1915 cabin that will serve as a retreat for cigar enthusiasts and whiskey connoisseurs.

The bar is located close to the ranch’s members’ club, Auric Room 1915, and benefits from views of Montana’s wild landscape.

The den dates to 1915, the same year the Lone Mountain Ranch was founded. It used to serve as a shelter for ‘trappers’, who hunted animals for their pelts.

Paul Makarechian, co-founder and CEO of Lone Mountain Ranch, said: “During a family road trip through Montana, I stumbled upon this very cabin in the backyard of a descendant of its original owner, still in pristine condition. With a ‘for sale’ sign out front, I seized the opportunity, negotiated a price, and transported the cabin back to the ranch to give it new life.

“We’re thrilled to continue expanding our guests’ experiences, and The Trapper’s Den is quickly becoming a beloved hideaway for guests and Auric Room members.”

The decor features rich wood interiors, ‘cosy’ seating and a vinyl record player with a curated music library. Vintage artefacts include antique trapping sets, bison hides, and early 20th-century treasures.

The bar will offer a selection of premium cigars from around the world, including Romeo y Julieta Reserva Real, Padron 3000 Natura and Davidoff Winston Churchill The Later Hour.

Aurim Room members can also make use of personalised humidors, crafted from repurposed ammunition cans.

The Trapper’s Den can accommodate up to eight guests indoors, with further seating for 20 on the wraparound deck.

Guests can also enjoy games of chess, backgammon and poker.

The Trapper’s Den shares a drinks selection with the ranch’s Horn & Cantle saloon. Whiskeys include Bulleit Rye, Woodfood Reserve Double Oak and Montana’s Wild Rye Five Drops.

In other Montana state news, the Montana Distillery closed last month.
