Former Rémy Cointreau exec joins SpiritsEurope

SpiritsEurope has named Hervé Dumesny, former group chief financial officer of Rémy Cointreau, as its interim director general.

French national Dumesny spent more than 16 years at Rémy-Cointreau, holding various senior roles

Dumesny fills the position left vacant by outgoing Ulrich Adam, who resigned in January after being appointed director general of Orgalim in Brussels, viewed as ‘the voice of Europe’s technology industries’.

Dumesny, meanwhile, previously served on Spirits Europe’s board between 2017 and 2021. His experience in the industry covers 16 years in senior executive roles at the Rémy-Cointreau group.

He will act as the trade body’s director general on an interim basis until a permanent successor has been found.

Adam, who held the director general position for seven years having joined the trade body in 2017, said: “Spirits are a true European success story, and I am extremely pleased to see Hervé Dumesny take over as interim director general to work closely with the board and members on the many challenges the sector is currently facing, ensuring seamless continuity in spiritsEurope’s operations.”

Looking back on his tenure, he recalled: “Leading the SpiritsEurope Secretariat and working closely with the members and our institutional partners has been a hugely dynamic and rewarding experience.

“From navigating tariff threats, the Covid crisis, rolling out our self-regulatory commitment on labelling, agreeing the 2019 EU Spirits Drinks Regulation, or championing the protection of products with Geographical Indications – the past seven years have been a particularly exciting and challenging time for spirits, yet also one marked by significant accomplishments.”

The latest tariff threat came last week, when US president Donald Trump responded to the EU’s threat of a 50% tariff on American whiskey with a 200% tax on wine and spirits.
