Diageo to build $415m Alabama plant
By Nicola CarruthersSmirnoff owner Diageo has revealed plans to open a US$415 million manufacturing and warehousing facility in Alabama, US, which will be fully operational later this year.

The 360,000-square-foot site in Montgomery, Alabama, will have a multi-million case annual production capacity for Diageo’s alcohol portfolio. The company produces brands such as Smirnoff, Don Julio, Bulleit Bourbon, Johnnie Walker and Captain Morgan.
Furthermore, the new facility will enhance the company’s North America supply chain operations and support future export growth.
Dubbed ‘Diageo Montgomery’, the location also provides a closer operational site for the firm’s distributors in the southern region.
It would cut carbon emissions as the location would result in less road travel, while also using ‘state-of-the-art’ technology for more efficient water and energy usage across the site.
Marsha McIntosh, president of North America supply at Diageo, said: “The new facility will not only bring our business closer to our customers and distributors in the south, but also enable our broader supply network to operate more efficiently and sustainably.
“This investment underscores our commitment to building greater resiliency into our supply chain across North America.”
Diageo said the project is part of a wider multi-year programme across several geographies to boost the company’s global supply chain, deliver productivity savings and increase sustainability.
The Diageo Montgomery facility is expected to be fully operational in the second half of 2025, creating around 100 full-time positions.
Approximately 750 jobs will be created during the construction phase.
As part of a broader initiative to support Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Minority-Serving Institutions (MSIs), Diageo has invested US$750,000 across three institutions in the state: Alabama A&M, Alabama State University, and Tuskegee University.
The company has provided scholarships and funding to support future leaders at the institutions.
The US is Diageo’s biggest region, accounting for 39% of the London-headquartered group’s sales. The company reported a 3% drop in North American sales for the year ending 30 June 2024.
In March 2022, Diageo opened a US$110m manufacturing site in Illinois, US, to help accelerate the firm’s ready-to-drink portfolio.
The company recently paused construction of its CA$245m (US$175.4m) distillery for Canadian whisky Crown Royal.
