Located in Bardstown, the brand home of Chicken Cock Whiskey is the latest to join Kentucky’s famed Bourbon Trail.

The brand home for Chicken Cock Whiskey, called Circa 1856, has officially joined the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. Opened in June 2024, it is located in one of the oldest homes in Bardstown’s historic downtown district and features a micro-distillery, cocktail bar, and retail space.

Chicken Cock was founded in 1856 by James A Miller, and revived in 2012 by Matti Anttila, CEO of Grain & Barrel Spirits. The brand produces Kentucky Straight Bourbon and rye whiskeys. It also offers a range of limited releases crafted in partnership with Bardstown Bourbon Company as part of its collaborative distillation programme.

Circa 1856 is open Monday and Tuesday 11am-6pm, Wednesday to Saturday from 11am-9pm and Sunday 1pm-5pm.

In February 2024, the Kentucky Distillers’ Association reported that Bourbon had generated US$9 billion for the state the previous year, fuelled by the ever-expanding Bourbon Trail. In 2022, the trail recorded more than two million visitors for the first time, as post-pandemic travel surged.

“The Kentucky Bourbon Trail has made massive contributions to the two essential features of tourism – providing visitors with experiences resulting in long-lasting memories and generating important economic benefits for the communities they visit,” said Hank Phillips, Kentucky Tourism Industry Association president and CEO.

“Bourbon has become more than an attraction in its own right. It is a Kentucky calling card, attracting many visitors to Kentucky’s broader array of exciting tourism opportunities. The Kentucky Bourbon Trail deserves enormous credit for that.”
