Barrell Craft Spirits iterates on Foundation Bourbon

The latest release from Barrell Craft Spirits places its entry-level Foundation Bourbon into new oak for a secondary maturation period.

Louisville-based blending and finishing house Barrell Craft Spirits has created a new expression of its Foundation Bourbon. Foundation Double Barrel receives a finishing period in new American oak, imparting notes of dark chocolate, leather, dried fruit, and toasted marshmallow.

Barrell launched the original Foundation Bourbon in October 2023 as the first non-cask-strength release in the brand’s 10-year history. Speaking to The Spirits Business, founder Joe Beatrice said it was an easy decision to tweak the brand’s identity and offer a whiskey that was both lower in proof and price.

“It’s the same promise we have with everything: to be at a quality level that is acceptable to us. It’s not something that we’ve compromised,” he said. “We think that having an entry at that price point will bring a lot more people into understanding our products.”

While Barrell was founded in 2013 on the premise of offering premium whiskey at a higher price point, typically US$90 or more, post-pandemic shifts in consumer spending have indicated that drinkers are more frequently looking for value. Extending the Foundation line suggests Barrell is committed to adapting to these shifts.

Barrell Foundation Double Barrel Bourbon will be available in select US markets for a suggested price of US$55.
