Spirit Master: Secret Garden Gin

Established in 2012 on a derelict plot, The Secret Garden Distillery on the outskirts of Edinburgh has been owned by sisters Isobel and Imogen Armstrong since 2022. This year, the producer gave its gin brand a ‘modern’ redesign, which led to a ‘significant increase’ in demand.

In total, Secret Garden’s range has gathered six Gold and four Silver medals this year

The most recent industry accolade for Secret Garden’s new range was achieved at The Design & Packaging Masters 2024, where the new bottle was recognised with two Gold medals. The judges were impressed by the brand’s “elegant glass embossing” while communicating the “brand ethos of being ‘rooted in nature’, with the garden bee embossed into the wooden stopper”.

But the brand’s appeal goes beyond the packaging. The Secret Garden Distillery has also gained recognition this year for its taste, winning three Gold and three Silver medals at The Gin Masters 2024 and a Gold and a Silver for its vermouth at The Liqueur & Speciality Spirits Masters 2024.

Furthermore, the Armstrong sisters were shortlisted at The Spirits Business Awards 2024 in the Young Achiever of the Year category for their success, creativity, and sustainability-driven practises and advocacy.

The new design was revealed in April 2024, coinciding with the second anniversary under the Armstrong family’s ownership. The update included a size-up from a 500ml bottle to a 700ml Leeds-made bespoke bottle with 70% recycled glass. Along with the new packaging, The Secret Garden has invested in sustainability in all aspects of the business, with a goal of achieving B Corp status in the near future.

According to Isobel Armstrong: “The new redesigned bottle not only embodies our brand story but also represents our core values of sustainability and environmental stewardship”.

The distillery’s range includes permanent gin expressions such as Wild, Rose, Elderflower & Jasmine, Lemon Verbena, Lavender and Pinot Noir Gin, as well as its seasonal summer release and the newly branded Winter Gin.

The distillery operates an adjacent 100%-natural botanical garden, where ingredients are sourced for the creation of Secret Garden’s products.
