The Gin Masters 2024 – First Tasting results

While the gin market has eased on the brakes from its high of a few years ago, it is still an incredibly vibrant sector, as proven by the first round of tastings for the Gin Masters.

There was a gin worth celebrating at every price point

Gin might be slowing down but it is certainly not out. The boom of recent years was always going to end, and in certain key markets, the category is seeing signs of a downward trend. However, on a global scale gin grew in volume terms in 2023, at a healthy 4%, according to IWSR data cited during Ginposium in London in June. This was a slowdown on the 8% increase in 2022 – but the category’s consumption levels remain 24% ahead of 2019.

“The industry has come out of the pandemic with a brief hiatus in growth and it’s still growing,” said Chris Pitcher, partner at Redburn Atlantic, while hosting a seminar at Ginposium. “It reached over 100 million cases, which is a phenomenal achievement.”

With consumers maintaining a keen interest in gin, and more brands than ever on the market, being able to showcase quality through professional accolades has never been more crucial. The first instalment of this year’s Gin Masters brought hundreds of bottles to the tasting tables – but which brands passed their quality checks?

No place like home house

Home House in London provided the setting for The Gin Masters 2024 – First Tasting in June. Forming the first of seven panels were: Cosmo Boardman, creative director at Moore House Cocktail Co; Simon Sharp, captain of Nautilus Gin Experiences; and Melita Kiely, editor of The Spirits Business, and chair of The Global Spirits Masters Competitions.

Matt Chambers, spirits writer and co-founder of the Whisky For Everyone blog, chaired a second group comprising Angelo Sparvoli, head bartender at the American Bar at The Savoy, and Graham McAteer, spirits partnerships lead at the Craft Gin Club.

Tobias Gorn, co-founder and senior partner at International Drinks Specialists, Marie Cheong-Thong, of The Larder at 36, sat on the same team. They were joined by Nicola Carruthers, deputy editor of The Spirits Business, who chaired the group.

Ruchira Neotia, drinks consultant, Neo Margarita, judged alongside Allison Strydom, of GinSquares, and Anne Jones, owner of Limestone & Jones Consultancy, who acted as chair. Freelance drinks writer and judge Sarah Miller chaired a group consisting of Sara Jane Eichler, of Negroni Club UK, and Henry Thorogood, European representative of Shimizu Seizaburo Shoten.

Emma Stokes, Gin Monkey, led a panel that included Tatti Sukamongkol, of Wanderlust Wine, and bar manager Emilia Wrelton.

And the seventh group included Dan Greifer, bar supervisor at Black Parrot, Steph DiCamillo, of Such and Cocktails by Mail, and David T Smith, writer and co-founder of the Craft Distilling Expo.

The judges

The tasting commenced with gins sorted by price point, starting with a flight of Standard bottlings costing up to £15 (US$19). Eight Gold medallists found success in the opening round – five of which were picked up by supermarket chain Aldi. Aldi’s Haysmith’s Seville Orange & Persian Lime Gin was among the Gold medallists, enjoyed for its “rhubarb crumble with a hint of ginger”. Royal Flush Gin also collected Gold in this flight after impressing with its “classic London Dry style, with a hint of citrus”. Commenting on the mix of gins and gin-based liqueurs, Gorn added: “At this price point, these liqueurs worked really well, and showed it’s not impossible to create great-quality, entry-level gins.” The first flight concluded with five Silver medals.

Progresssing to the Premium heat, where gins are priced between £16 and £20, the first Master medallists of the day were discovered. Two top awards were handed out in this round, including a Master for Water Dragon Spirits. “Dry woody herbs on an impressive nose,” noted one judge. “Herbaceous, full-bodied with a long finish.”

The second Master medal was awarded to Chiyomusubi Craft Gin Impact, which pleasantly surprised the judges with its “unusual fruity nose”. The palate brought “bright citrus, exotic spice and a spearmint note on the finish – complex and interesting”.

Two Gold medals were awarded, to Skagerrak Nordic Distilled Gin and Còmhla Scottish Gin. Skagerrak Nordic Distilled Gin delivered flavours of “warming cardamom and peppery spice with orange citrus”. Còmhla Scottish Gin had an “aromatic nose” leading to “freshness from the juniper, lime zest and fresh black pepper”. Six Silver medals completed the flight.

Jones noted: “A diverse flight, showing how tricky the lower price points are to navigate. Some well-made and classic examples versus over-worked or synthetic profiles. The more successful were simple and with well-integrated alcohol.”

In the more expensive Super-Premium segment, which looked at gins between £21 and £35, another Master medal joined the growing haul: Tanqueray No. Ten. “A lovely example of a London Dry,” said Greifer. Tasting notes included “heavy juniper, lovely citrus peel and cardamom pushing through”. Smith said it was a “textbook classic gin”.

A plethora of Gold medals gave the flight a boost – 16, to be exact. Among these were Hernö Pink Btl Gin, which impressed with “delicate florals” on the nose and “good texture” on the palate.

Malfy Originale also secured a Gold medal with “oily lemon” aromas, which also delivered on the palate. Stranger & Sons Gin, Highclere Castle Gin, and Siginia Stella Notte were also found to be deserving of the Gold award. Furthermore, nine Silver medals delivered in this heat.

“This was a varied flight with some good examples for the price range,” said Strydom.

As the medal tally shows, the Ultra Premium (£36-plus) flight is where the gin producers really elevated the standard of the tasting. Seven Masters were awarded in this flight alone.

The Aberturret Gin was one of the Master recipients, enjoyed for its “good texture, classic flavour profile, with some angelica root and coriander seeds”, which added a touch of spice on the finish. Also sitting in the Master echelons was Gin Mare Capri. The judges praised this gin’s “florality on the nose, with aniseed punching through the juniper” on the palate. “On the boundary of contemporary, but an excellent spirit,” said Smith. Hernö Gin secured the Master accolade for being “very moreish”. Tasting notes included “lemon, salt juniper and delicate fruit”.

Palmaráe Gin Premier Cru secured a Master medal thanks to tasting notes such as: “Pronounced floral character on the palate. Citrussy, peppery, floral and complex.”

Shortcross Gin gained a Master award for its “big herbaceous notes”, which left a positive impression on the judges. They also enjoyed a “zingy hit of exotic spice, leading to a long complex finish”. Also winning a Master in this flight was Epicureans Spirit Gin, which was found to be “super zesty” on the nose. Its palate was “elegant and floral, with plenty or orange zest and pepper spice” plus “decent levels of juniper”.

Completing the Master run in this heat was Ki No Bi Sei Kyoto Dry Gin. “Lovely mouthfeel to the fore of the palate,” one judge noted. Flavours included “citrus, spice and a long aromatic finish”.

No fewer than 18 Gold medals were celebrated in the same flight. From these, The Kyoto Distillery won for Ki No Tea and Ki No Bi. Secret Garden Distillery also secured a Gold medal for its Wild gin, which had “some menthol, sweet shisho leaf notes”. Gold winners also included Cygnet 22, Archie Rose Bone Dry Gin, and Height of Arrows. Four Silver medallists finished the round.

“There were some standout gins in this flight that showed good balance and complexity of flavours, worthy of the higher price point,” said Kiely.

Chambers was also impressed with the heat. He said: “Great consistency and quality across the flight. It shows that you get what you pay for.”

The standard only grew as the tasting moved from assessments based on price points to gin styles. Starting with a large number of London Dry gins, the judges were left very happy indeed. Ten Master medals were awarded in this round.

The Master winners included Portofino Dry Gin – La Penisola, enjoyed for its “crisp, juniper, fresh leafy notes”, and Hernö Gin 47, which “allows the juniper to shine at this higher ABV”.
Colombo No9 with Earl Grey was deemed worthy of a Master medal. The judges like the juxtaposition between “soft tea notes” on the nose, but “much more dominant Earl Grey flavours” on the palate. “This would be an interesting component in cocktails,” noted Carruthers.

Master-winning Gin Ashmont was described as a “very classic London Dry style with a good level of juniper and spice”. In addition, Beefeater 24 also took home the top award for its notes of “bergamot, citrus, coriander and subtle spice”.

“Good intensity of flavour with piney juniper and a peppery backbone” won Jawbox Export Strength Gin a Master medal. Joining the Master ranks was AmberChes Botanical Gin, which was liked for its “cardamom-dominant nose” leading to “juniper, citrussy coriander and impressive length”. Naught Classic Dry Gin was “slightly woody and herbal, with bitter notes of grapefruit pith”, all of which contributed towards its Master win.

Nine Sisters Ocean Gin also left a memorable impression on the judges, winning a Master medal for being “sharp, with a nice citrus palate”.

The final Master in this flight was delivered to Västerås Navy Strength. “The juniper and citrus is strong, yet for its ABV it is very mellow, and doesn’t feel harsh,” said Greifer.

A whopping 27 Gold medals were delivered in this flight. Gold award-winners included “expressive and citrussy” The Botanist Islay Dry Gin, and “juniper-forward” Mallard Point London Dry Gin. Whitley Neill Distiller’s Cut London Dry Gin also secured a Gold medal for having a “great spicy mix”.

Bringing the flight to a close were 20 Silver medallists, including Greater Than London Dry Gin, Misty Isle Salty & Sweet, Broken Bones London Dry Gin, and Patience Winter Gin.

Cheong-Thong said: “There was a very high standard throughout, shows high quality. Deserving of the price point.”

“There was a lot to discover,” added Kiely. “I enjoyed seeing more brands pushing the boundaries of London Dry in particular, from more earthy spices to green freshness.”

Good intensity

More Master medals made for an enjoyable flight of Contemporary. Two medals were collected by Whiskey&Co: On Spring, and Teen Spirits. The latter gin satisfied the judges with its “good level of flavour with citrus, some resin and good intensity for a colour-changing gin”.

Patience Spring Gin boosted the Master tally with notes of “dill and caraway – like part gin, part aquavit, but nicely made”. Master-winning Shortcross Citrus Drizzle Gin had “very perfumed notes”, while Master-winning Hernö Juniper Cask Gin gave “lots of cedarwood and pine”.

Australia’s Four Pillars Distillery collected two Master medals, for its Olive Leaf Gin and Spiced Negroni Gin. The former gained the top award for being “moreish with big bursts of flavour”.

The last Master in this flight went to “very complex and exciting” Zummit Dry, with “curried and spicy notes”.

The Gold medal tally in the Contemporary flight finished at 19 awards. Some of the Gold winners were: Sir Edmond Gin, Renais Gin, Archie Rose Signature Dry Gin, and Bosque Gin Nativo. The latter gin was found to be “bright with lots of juniper and some earthy liquorice”. Eight Silver medals – including awards for Bosque Gin Alta Montaña, Hapusa Himalayan Dry Gin and Ginagain 01 – completed the Contemporary heat.

Keeping things short and sweet, the Old Tom round produced two standout Master winners. First, Hernö Old Tom Gin: “Juniper-forward on the nose, botanically intense palate with lasting sweetness.” Master-winning Broken Bones Old Tom Gin was praised for being “citrus-forward, complex and interesting; grapefruit, anise, and honeyed sweetness”.

Creamier than expected

The Navy Strength contingent produced another Master medallist: Naught Overproof Gin. The judges found this to be “fresh, clean with herbs, menthol and pine; the palate is creamier than expected”. “Balanced and classic” Plymouth Navy Strength and “full-bodied” Hernö Navy Strength Gin both picked up Gold medals in this heat. Five Silver medals rounded off the flight.

Swedish distiller Hernö expanded its medal collection in the following flight: Cask-Aged. Hernö Juniper Cask Gin was the top medallist in this flight, taking home a Master. The award was given due to the gin’s “luscious mouthfeel with good intensity on the palate and impressive balance”.

“Characterful” Martin Miller’s 9 Moons and “well-aged” Four Pillars Whisky Barrel Gin both gained Gold medals. Four Silvers medals concluded the Cask-Aged heat.

From there, the judges turned their attention to Organic gins. Two Gold medals and a trio of Silvers were awarded. The Gold winners included “tangy and zesty” Truce of Gin, and “honeyed and aromatic” Drylaw Organic Muscatel Gin.

Well balanced

The first Master winner of four in the Microdistillery round, Västerås London Dry, was just the ticket for the judges. One judge said: “Really well balanced, coherent, smooth; plenty of juniper, yuzu, citrus, and spice all layered.” The gin’s stablemate, Västerås Navy Strength, also secured a Master award.

Hernö collected another Master for its Navy Strength Gin, while “elegant, extremely flavourful and complex” Great Bustard Gin was also awarded the top accolade. Three Gold medals completed the flight.

The Pink Gin round gave a Gold medal to Mallard Point English Rose, described as being “floral with faint berry fruits”. Four Silver medals were also enjoyed.

Meanwhile, an abundance of Gold medals made for happy judges in the Flavoured Gin flight. Gordon’s Tropical Passionfruit received a Gold medal for its “intense but authentic” flavour profile and distinct passionfruit notes. Signature Brands received two Golds, including one for Agnes Arber Pineapple Gin with its “tangy, tropical” profile.

Malfy Limone, Royal Flush Luxe Noir, and Gin AU 79 also received Gold medals. Sixteen Silver medals, in addition to the 12 Golds made for a strong flight.

Two Golds closed the first part of The Gin Masters in the Gin Liqueur round.

Both medals were collected by Aldi Stores Australia, including for The Infusionist Chocolate and Roses Flavoured Gin Liqueur. The judges said the gin was “sweet but great fun – you can taste chocolate and roses”.

With multiple styles showcasing many top-scoring gins, it is clear there is lots of life left in this vibrant category.
