Michter’s brings back 20YO Bourbon
Louisville-based Michter’s Distillery is rereleasing one of its rarest whiskeys for the first time since 2022.
After holding it back last year, Michter’s has announced a new bottling of its 20-year-old Bourbon as approved by master distiller Dan McKee and master of maturation Andrea Wilson.
“Michter’s 20 Year is a remarkable drinking experience,” Wilson said. “It’s luxurious and expansive — a broad palate of flavour that culminates in a viscous, dark, and richly-complex finish. Taking over two decades in the making, this Bourbon doesn’t just taste good, it evokes a piece of that timeless history, of life’s warm and glowing moments. It’s truly a once-in-a-lifetime Bourbon!”
The 2024 release of the 20-year-old whiskey is bottled at 57.1% ABV and priced at US$1,200.
It takes careful cask management to push a Bourbon age this far without overexposing the new charred oak, which contributes to the team’s selective nature when planning the releases.
“Reaching ages beyond 15 years without the whiskey getting too woody is an achievement that our team strives for,” president Joseph J Magliocco added. “This is an exceptional release, and we only wish we had more to offer.”
In April 2023, Michter’s announced that it was unlikely to meet demand even with increased fermentation capacity. “We have an over 30-year planning horizon for our whiskeys and use models to plan sales and work hard to focus on staying true to the quality of our whiskeys,” Wilson said at the time.
In November 2023, Michter’s released its 25-year-old Bourbon for the first time in three years. That whiskey was bottled at 58.1% ABV and priced at US$1,500. They followed that up with a new batch of 10-year-old Bourbon, released in March 2024. Then, in June, Michter’s released the latest editions in its Legacy Series, which features the Shenk’s Homestead and Bomberger’s labels. Those whiskeys made their way to the UK in early October.
