InchDairnie to double production capacity

To mark its 10th anniversary in 2025, InchDairnie Distillery in Fife, Scotland, plans to double its whisky production with a ‘significant’ distillery expansion.

With a major infrastructure investment, the developments will enable the Scotch producer to increase its capacity from two million to 4m-litres of alcohol per year, and prepare it for switching from natural gas to 100% green hydrogen for distillation.

Scott Sneddon, managing director at InchDairnie Distillery, said: “Whisky is a long-term business, and the developments we are announcing today are all part of the meticulous planning and long-term viewpoint that can be seen throughout our business decision-making since our beginning in 2015.

“As we prepare to mark 10 years, the doubling of capacity is a bold move, but one that ensures we are set to meet the increased growth in demand for our products that we predict will come as more and more discover our innovative whiskies and full flavours.”

With energy efficiency at the core of the distillery’s developments, two new stills will be added – one wash and one spirit – complete with energy recovery systems and double condensers like the existing stills.

Furthermore, four on-site warehouses will be built, with land secured for a further 14, plus three new washbacks to support the distillery’s 24/7 production.

The distillery’s conversion to green hydrogen from natural gas will reduce its carbon footprint by an estimated 35%. Achieved through the installation of a new Bosch Hydrogen Ready boiler, it is expected that ScottishPower will begin to supply green hydrogen in 2027.

InchDairnie Distillery is said to have a reputation for producing flavour-led whisky using ‘cutting-edge’ technology. On the back of the release of its acclaimed RyeLaw whisky in 2023, the brand said that further releases are set to follow next year, and the expansion comes as it aims to meet future demand for its ‘sought-after’ spirit.

Ian Palmer, founder and chairman at InchDairnie Distillery, said: “The installation of the new infrastructure at the distillery is testament to the quality of spirit that we are producing here in Fife, and have done for a decade.

“Demand from industry partners for our new-make liquid has been high, and the response we have had to our first release, RyeLaw, unveiled last year, has been both satisfying and humbling.”
