The Single Cask selects whisky experts

Scotch independent bottler The Single Cask has picked a panel of ‘taste masters’ to help profile its whiskies by mood.

Based in Fife, The Single Cask launched to make the process of selecting a whisky easier and quicker for people. It places its bottles within five mood categories: cheerful, playful, bold, curious and easy-going.

It houses more than 3,000 casks in its warehouse in Glenrothes.

The Taster Masters panel is made up of eight ‘highly experienced sensory experts’ whom the Single Cask consider the best of the best.

The panel will work with the company to assist in nosing, tasting, bottling and approving its single cask whiskies.

Those recruited include Mark Watt, co-founder of Campbeltown Whisky Company; Lucy Connor, a recent graduate from the OurWhisky Foundation mentorship programme; Imogen Russon-Taylor, founder and CEO of Scotland’s first fragrance house, Kingdom Scotland; Rob Robinson, a ‘true whisky adventurer’ behind the charity project Whisky Ventures, where he cycled 2,500 miles across Scotland and visited every single malt distillery; Steven Shand, who has 13 years of experience working in the whisky industry, including with Kingsbarns Distillery and Wemyss Family Spirits; Dr Christopher White, a whisky writer, presenter, and judge; John Lamond, behind the Scotch Whisky Trail Certificate course and a Keeper of the Quaich; and Maria Scala, who has spent time working in fine dining restaurants across London.

Jan Damen, general manager at The Single Cask, said: “We only bottle exciting and entertaining whiskies worth talking about, so we wanted to work with exciting and entertaining flavour experts.

“All of our selected candidates have the charisma and creativity we were looking for. We are already so impressed with our talented Taste Masters; there’s lots of excitement on the horizon for The Single Cask.”

The Single Cask’s collection includes bottlings from Bruichladdich, Glenrothes, Ardmore, Tobermory and Caol Ila.
