SB meets… Y.T. Lee, Kavalan Whisky

Kavalan Distillery was established in 2005 with a singular goal: to produce world-class single malt whisky. Kavalan aimed to create 100% Taiwanese whisky that would embody the spirit of the land and establish itself as a distillery with a legacy lasting for generations. Nearly 20 years later, Kavalan has become a globally celebrated premium whisky producer, as the CEO explains.

What would you say is the secret of Kavalan’s success?

Our unwavering commitment to the highest quality is ingrained in our brand mission, and is present in every part of our production process. Our whisky is unique due to its incredible smoothness, tropical fruity flavours, rich floral notes, and purity of liquid. Furthermore, our efficient ageing process, aided by Taiwan’s subtropical climate, ensures perfect maturation, giving our whisky its exceptional character.

What has been Kavalan’s most significant impact on the global whisky industry?

Two decades ago, Kavalan turned long-held assumptions in the whisky industry on their heads. It turned a disadvantage – heat – into the very key to its success. It pioneered not just a new homeland for whisky but also overturned the notion that age directly translates to quality. Kavalan has shown that different environments can contribute to distinct and high-quality whiskies. We have set a precedent by showing that exceptional whisky can be made outside traditional whisky-producing regions. Our success has proven that unique geographical conditions can create excellent whisky flavours. Kavalan is a pioneer, making the impossible possible.

What are Kavalan’s key focus points?

Our main focus always remains the flavour and quality of our whisky. No matter how we challenge the limits, drive innovation, and continuously launch new products to meet market demands. We are committed to pushing the boundaries of what is possible in whisky making and staying ahead of industry trends. Maintaining innovation and quality is crucial.

How is the company engaging existing and new customers?

Kavalan Distillery is open to the public and offers tours that educate visitors about our whisky production process. Visitors can also enjoy whisky ‘on tap’ directly from stacked casks at our Kavalan Whisky Bar, promoting whisky as a sensory delight.

Globally, we partner with top distributors to understand each market thoroughly. We host tasting and pairing sessions to invite people to experience Kavalan’s dedication to craftsmanship firsthand.

What new releases is the distillery offering this year?

This year marks a significant milestone for Kavalan Distillery. To honour the occasion, we have launched a special-edition tribute to our renowned single cask cask-strength series, Solist.

The 15th Anniversary Oloroso Sherry and the 15th Anniversary ex-Bourbon are dedicated to our devoted Kavalan collectors, and embody our rich heritage and commitment to excellence.

In addition, we are excited to announce an exclusive release for international markets. This limited edition offering represents a milestone that reflects our deep connection to Kavalan’s roots and our forward-looking innovation.

What is next for Kavalan?

Looking forward, Kavalan Distillery enters an exciting new phase with our expanded third maturation warehouse, surpassing the capacity of our first and second warehouses. This expansion expects to introduce special editions of significant value.
