Penelope Bourbon brings back Toasted Rye
By Miona MadsenLuxco-owned Penelope Bourbon has revealed the second release of its annual Straight Rye Whiskey Toasted series.
The second release has a mash bill of 95% rye and 5% malted barley. The whiskey is finished in new, freshly toasted barrels and is offered at 100 proof (50% ABV).
“After what we achieved with last year’s release, we are really excited for our second instalment,” said Michael Paladini, founder of Penelope Bourbon.
“Our first Toasted Rye scored 99 points at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, and we’re confident this release will be equally well received.”
Penelope Toasted Rye displays ‘layered aromas of bold, sweet butterscotch on the nose, followed by vanilla, toasted marshmallow, light tobacco and fruit on the palate with a long finish of sweet dessert, orange peel and subtle spice’.
Limited to 9,000 cases – 54,000 750ml bottles – the Toasted Rye is now available with a suggested retail price of US$74.99.
“After ageing the rye whiskey for six years prior to finishing, this year’s release resulted in a profile that we believe will really stand out,” said Daniel Polise, founder and master blender of Penelope Bourbon.
“The char two profile of the finishing barrels used brought out rich butterscotch notes to the blend of selected barrels, adding additional layers and depth to a great rye whiskey.”
Penelope Bourbon was founded in 2018 and offers a range of Bourbon and rye whiskies, including the Cooper series, limited releases and Founders Reserve lines.
In May 2023, Luxco announced the acquisition of the brand, which was finalised a month later.
Today, Penelope Bourbon is available in 47 states and three countries.
