Elephant Gin secures future with new buyer
By Melita KielyCarl-Lambert Leisewitz has acquired Elephant Gin after the former owner failed to finance the previously agreed business plan.

Compagnia dei Caraibi bought Elephant Gin at the end of 2022 for an undisclosed sum.
However, Compagnia dei Caraibi was unable to finance the previously agreed business plan, meaning Elephant Gin had to declare insolvency earlier this year.
During the insolvency process, Compagnia dei Caraibi lost the brand, Elephant Gin confirmed. An M&A (merger and acquisition) advisor was able to successfully find a new buyer in Leisewitz. Financial details were not revealed.
Leisewitz has been in the food and beverage industry in Germany for more than 20 years. Among his various ventures, he runs Laux Deli, a delicatessen and spirits production company with a team of approximately 100 people.
The gin producer assured that while the company’s shareholder structure has changed, the management and majority of the team has remained intact. The gin brand also said its mission, operations and products would remain the same.
The company will remain independent; the current branding and distribution strategies will also continue.
Elephant Gin’s co-founder, Robin Gerlach, said: “We are excited that the future of Elephant Gin is now secured. We would like to thank our team primarily for their loyal support.
“Our foremost focus is now on the distribution of our products with our loyal partners both domestically and abroad.”
Since its establishment, the brand has been committed to elephant conservation efforts. In 2022, the Elephant Gin Foundation was created as a non-profit-organisation to help protect African wildlife.
Elephant Gin’s co-founder, Tessa Gerlach, added: “While we see an enormous potential for an organised restart, we are also committed to bringing our elephant conservation efforts back to the forefront.”
