Lochlea opens cask programme to public

Ayrshire-based Lochlea Distillery is offering members of the public the chance to buy a cask of whisky, after initially only being open to private customers.

Lochlea’s Private Cask Programme was initially available to customers who joined their waiting list from 2018 onwards.

Now the Scottish distillery is offering two types of casks to the public: first-fill Bourbon barrels and first-fill oloroso Sherry hogsheads.

All casks are kept under bond at the distillery for at least 10 years, after which it can then either be stored for longer, bottled under the customer’s own personal label or sold back to the distillery as desired.

Buyers will be able to visit their cask at the distillery, attend a Cask Owner’s Day and sample the liquid in its early stages as it matures to become a single malt whisky.

John Campbell, Lochlea production director, said: “Our Private Cask Programme is an incredibly special chance to be a part of our ambitious, exciting and innovative distillery and brand.

“As a family-owned distillery, we want to ensure that our customers feel close to us. Those deciding to take the step to purchase their own Lochlea cask can witness and explore each stage of the whisky-making process, with our experienced team by their side at every step of the journey.

“Our spirit is made entirely from our own barley that is grown and harvested on the farm here at Lochlea. This, along with our finest quality casks and decades of distilling expertise gives our spirit a distinctive character and ensures we are as sustainable and traceable as possible.”

The cask programme is open for a limited time. Interested buyers can get in touch via casks@lochleadistillery.com.

Lochlea will launch its third seasonal edition at the end of the month.

The distillery will celebrate its fifth anniversary this year.
