Jigger & Pony to open bar in Indonesia

The teams behind some of Southeast Asia’s most high-profile bars – the Jigger & Pony Group and The Union Group – are joining forces to open a site in Jakarta.

The bar will open within the Grand Hyatt Jakarta

Named Cosmo Pony, the site is expected to open in mid-2024 within the Grand Hyatt Jakarta.

It will mark the first time that the Jigger & Pony Group ventures outside of Singapore, where it looks after seven bars including its flagship, the Jigger & Pony.

Last year, Jigger & Pony won Best International Hotel Bar and was a finalist for Best International Bar Team at the 17th annual Spirited Awards.

Jigger & Pony Group’s co-founder Indra Kantono said: “Over the past decade, we have been on a mission to create one-of-a-kind spaces for guests to find comfort, forge friendships and share happiness, and it has always been our dream to do the same outside of Singapore.

“The restaurant and bar scene in Jakarta has been really exciting in recent years; there’s a palpable sense of energy and enthusiasm among the guests and bartenders in the city. One can sense that Jakarta is a city rising – I’m confident it will be the next cocktail capital of Southeast Asia, given its large population of discerning drink and food lovers, and we are looking forward to being a part of the city.”

The Union Group, meanwhile, has 22 bars in Indonesia, including American brasserie Union and The Cocktail Club – both of which feature on many Asia’s best bar lists.

Stefanie Wijono, The Union Group’s deputy marketing & PR director, added: “We’ve been friends for some years now, and our mutual respect and admiration for each other’s work has finally led to this.

“The Union Group and Jigger & Pony Group share similar values on hospitality, quality of offerings, and work ethic, and we complement each other in many ways, so working together on Cosmo Pony feels natural for both companies.”

The concept and drinks programme for Cosmo Pony are still under development.

In other recent Southeast Asia news, data from the UK government showed exports of Scotch whisky and gin to Singapore increased by double digits in the year to October 2023.

Bar Convent Singapore will also return at the end of the year.
