Renegade Rum launches flagship range

Grenada-based brand Renegade Rum has announced a new range of four expressions that further its commitment to transparency and terroir.

Renegade’s new flagship range of rums includes three aged and one unaged expression

The new range from the brand, which was founded by Mark Reynier, will be released in select markets in December. Renegade launched last summer and has released a series of pre-cask bottlings, but it will now introduce four core expressions: three aged in a mixture of French and American oak, and one unaged.

“We were delighted with the initial awards and accolades for our pre-cask bottlings, but now it is time to evolve our concept even further,” said Reynier, who was formerly managing director of Bruichladdich.

All-Island Cuvée: Nova is distilled in pot and column stills from Lacalome Red, Yellow Lady, Lodger, Cain, and Clean Ester sugarcane varieties. It is a blend of multiple single farm origins and wood types, bottled at 46% ABV and priced at US$60. Renegade calls it the distillery’s ‘greatest assemblage of component terroirs’.

Single Farm Cuvée: Dunfermline is distilled in pot and column stills from Lacalome Red sugarcane and takes inspiration from the Grand Vins of Bordeaux. It is bottled at 50% ABV and priced at US$70.

MicrOrgin: Hope is distilled in pot and retort stills from Lodger sugarcane. Bottled at 55% ABV and priced at US$80, the expression focuses on flavours derived from a single field.

The final expression, Cuvée: Aura is distilled in pot and column stills from Lacalome Red, Lodger, and Cain sugarcane varieties. It is unaged, bottled at 46% ABV, and priced at US$50, representing the distillery’s ‘pure spirit and fresh rum flavours’.

Each rum comes with a CaneCode that grants drinkers access to the cane varieties, cask makeup, and additional information that furthers Renegade’s commitment to transparency and provenance.

“These are creative assemblages that bring greater complexity for the drinker,” Reynier said. “Finally, spirits enthusiasts or single malt drinkers who are searching for transparency in rum – something authentic and natural, with a real story to tell – will, I hope, have delight in exploring the frontiers of rum’s natural flavour.”

Every expression of Renegade Rum is non-chill filtered with natural colour and no added sugar. Reynier announced plans for the Grenada distillery in July 2018, with production beginning in September 2020. After bringing a heightened degree of transparency and innovation to Scotch whisky with Bruichladdich, Reynier is doing the same with Waterford within Irish whiskey, and Renegade within rum.
