Johnnie Walker collaborates with Honey Dijon
Diageo-owned Johnnie Walker is celebrating the launch of its Blue Label Elusive Umami by teaming up with DJ Honey Dijon.
The Grammy-award-winning producer has created a track inspired by the whisky brand’s latest limited edition release, collaborating with master blender Dr Emma Walker to understand the blending process and tasting notes.
The whisky brand also collaborated with Michelin-starred chef Kei Kobayashi to create the Scotch, which has a distinct and complex umami profile.
To create the track, Johnnie Walker used PlantWave technology, which is a way of monitoring the electrical signals of plants as sound.
The brand says that the technology extracted the vibrational waves from the oak casks in which the whisky is matured, which were then transferred into sound. Dijon then converted these sounds into the melody of her track, titled ‘Earthly Delights’.
Dijon said: “I pride myself on being a sonic storyteller. Transforming the biorhythms into music was something that interested me.
“Music and rhythm exist in all parts of life in some way – creating music from plants added a random dimension to my process, which was cool.”
The track will be available today (18 October) on YouTube, alongside a visualiser designed by creative collective ShowStudio.
The track is accompanied by a short film called ‘The Sound of Umami’, which documents the process of creating both the track and the whisky.
Walker commented: “For Johnnie Walker Blue Label Elusive Umami, only one in 25,000 casks made the cut when we carefully searched our reserves for that new delicious umami flavour profile.
“Each expression of the Scotch whisky was hand-picked, allowing us to bring the unique character of this innovative blend to life, which Dijon has captured perfectly in the new track.
“As a true feast for the senses, Johnnie Walker Blue Label Elusive Umami needed the right sound accompaniment.
“Blending is a skill that’s as much an art as a science – we pull from our knowledge of all whisky types, similarly to the way Honey Dijon drew from her wealth of experience in music to create Earthly Delights, in a way that only she could.”
Johnnie Walker Blue Label Elusive Umami became available globally this week (16 October), with an RRP of £300 (US$370).
