Edrington-owned The Macallan has acquired Sherry cask supplier Vasyma and entered into a joint venture with US-based Coopers Oak.

Based in Jerez, Spain, the Vasyma cooperage has provided oak casks to The Macallan and Edrington for more than 30 years.

The casks from Vasyma are filled with Sherry in Jerez and transported to The Macallan Estate in Speyside to be filled with liquid.

Igor Boyadjian, managing director, The Macallan, said: “We hand select Sherry-seasoned oak casks from Jerez for the richness and complexity they bring to our exceptional Scotch whisky.

“Bringing Vasyma into our ownership is a logical step and further demonstration of our pursuit of incomparable craftsmanship and whisky mastery.

“Our investment in Vasyma also builds on our ever-deepening relationship with the Jerez community and with our much-valued suppliers in the Sherry industry, which plays such an important role in the quality of The Macallan.”

Founded in 1987, the cooperage specialises in creating casks for the Scotch whisky, Sherry, and brandy sectors.

The Vasyma team will be retained following the deal and will continue to be led by managing director Ventura Nuñez.

American oak venture

In addition, The Macallan’s new joint venture with Ohio-based Coopers Oak will enable the whisky brand to secure a supply of American oak.

Coopers Oak is Vasyma’s main supplier of American oak staves for cask manufacturing.

Scott McCroskie, CEO of Edrington, added: “Vasyma’s high quality casks, made from oak expertly sourced by Coopers Oak, have played an important role in the history and success of The Macallan.

“We look forward to working closer than ever with these fine craftsmen in Jerez and Ohio as we continue to focus on the quality and resilience of The Macallan’s cask supply chain.”

Edrington has a 70% stake in The 1887 company, which controls single malt brand The Macallan, while fellow Scottish spirits firm William Grant & Sons owns the remaining 30%.

In March this year, The Macallan purchased a 50% stake in Jerez-based Grupo Estévez to have exclusive supply of its Sherry casks.

Last week, the Speyside single malt producer released its new Colour Collection, marking the return of age-statement whiskies to the brand’s global travel retail offering.

Edrington could be on Campari Group’s radar for a merger or acquisition, analysts at Deutsche Bank have predicted.
