Japan-based Karuizawa Distilllers (KDI) has launched the website of its new Komoro Distillery and visitor centre, which is set to open on 23 July.

The distillery will offer its ‘much-anticipated’ Whisky Academy

The state-of-the-art distillery is located on the outskirts of Komoro, in the Nagano prefecture.

Komoro Distillery’s website allows users to book visits to the distillery, which now has operational pot stills, and access its ‘much-anticipated’ Whisky Academy.

CEO Koji Shimaoka said: “I really cannot believe that we are finally here. It has taken almost three years of planning and building; plus the time it took to find the location and to secure funding. I could not be more proud of what the KDI team have achieved, plus all of the associated people, without whom this would not be possible.

“We are all so happy and cannot wait to welcome visitors to our wonderful distillery and visitor centre.”

The visitor centre includes a bar and shop on the first floor, and masterclass rooms on the second floor, primarily for use by the on-site Whisky Academy.

Komoro Distillery is constructed out of glass and wood, and its water source (‘Noma’) from Mount Asama flows past the distillery.

Plans for the distillery were unveiled in 2020, with an aim to honour the Karuizawa name. Production was originally intended to begin in 2022.

The Karuizawa distillery closed its doors in 2000.
