Drizly predicts rum resurgence in 2023
Alcohol e-commerce platform Drizly has revealed that rum may experience a resurgence in 2023, and shoppers will look to drinks deals to fight inflation.
Drizly has released its 2023 Bev Alc Trend Report, which surveyed more than 1,000 adults about how they plan to shop and drink in the coming year.
It was conducted in October 2022, and participants were able to select as many of the answers that applied to them.
More than one-third of respondents said they were likely to spend the most money on rum in 2023 (33%), which triumphed against Bourbon (32%) and American whiskey (31%). Tequila claimed the highest stake at 35%.
In regards to first choice for a spirits base in a ready-to-drink (RTD) cocktail, 34% of those surveyed ranked rum above whiskey (31%) and gin (17%), with vodka a preferred choice of 61% of consumers, and Tequila securing 45% of the vote.
In the low-and-no category, RTD cocktails took the top spot (10%) among non-alcoholic drinks that consumers anticipate consuming in 2023.
Meanwhile, 36% of respondents cited Tequila-based RTDs as the ‘top emerging drink category’ they want to try in 2023, followed by hard soda (34%) and hard coffee (23%).
Additionally, 47% of respondents said they anticipate drinking RTDs during all seasons this year, signalling the serve’s ‘move between spring and summertime sipping’, according to Drizly.
Finally, 34% of respondents said that they will ‘proactively shop for drink deals’ in 2023 due to inflation.
In October 2022, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) took action against Drizly and its CEO for alleged security failures that resulted in the leak of the personal information of 2.5 million users.
In August last year, Drizly revealed it was supporting underrepresented brand founders with its new Sip With Purpose initiative – including a US$4m investment.
Last year, the drinks business explored rum’s potential for a renaissance.
