In January this year, Uber announced it was axing the alcohol delivery service to focus on its Uber Eats app, which saw alcohol sales more than double last year.

The company said consumers were ‘increasingly preferring’ the one-stop-shop convenience of being able to get multiple types of products delivered using the same app.

According to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Act (WARN) filing on the Massachusetts government website, 168 employees will now lose their jobs between April and September.

When approached by The Spirits Business, Uber confirmed the information in the WARN notice but provided no additional statement.

At the time of the announcement, Uber stated that Drizly roles would be eliminated, along with some Uber roles connected to the service. Some Drizly staff will be offered roles elsewhere in the business.

In February 2021, Uber agreed to acquire Drizly for approximately US$1.1 billion, with the deal completed in October that same year.

Before buying Drizly, Uber acquired food delivery service Postmates for US$2.65bn and took a majority stake in Latin American grocery delivery platform Cornershop for US$459m.
