Brewdog cask sale breaks record
Scottish spirits producer Brewdog Distilling Co has hosted the ‘best performing’ whisky cask auction for a distillery start-up after fetching £377,000 (US$466,880) for 50 casks.
The distillery revealed earlier this month that it would be auctioning 50 whisky casks in its first cask whisky sale. The auction was hosted by Whisky Hammer, and closed after four days.
Steven Kersley, managing director of Brewdog Distilling, said: “In the last two weeks since announcing our first cask auction, we’ve been blown away by the support, enthusiasm and the amount of interest in our whisky programme.
“We’re so proud of the work we’re doing, and it was brilliant to see that reflected in the success of the auction. We’re now looking ahead to 2023, where our focus, as always, will be instilling great flavour into our whiskies and taking as many people on our whisky journey as possible – we might even auction a few more casks.”
The 50 casks each sold for a starting price of £5,000 (US$6,192), and moved up to an average sale price of £7,546 (US$9,345).
The 50 200-litre casks included 30 ex-oloroso Sherry, 15 ex-Bourbon and five single grain ex-Bourbon casks.
The casks will be filled from Brewdog Distilling’s new distillery in Ellon, Aberdeen. The filling will take place in early 2023.
Daniel Milne, managing director and co-founder of Whisky Hammer, said: “We are incredibly proud of the success of the Brewdog Distilling cask auction which has highlighted strong demand for cask ownership and support for new distilleries in the whisky industry.
“The auction generated a fantastic level of interest from our global audience, with all 50 of the 200-litre casks selling for over £7,500 (US$9,288) per cask on average, while cask number one reached an impressive £12,500 (US$15,478). We look forward to following the distillery’s journey and sampling the whisky once matured.”
In October, the brand debuted its new line of vodka made from beer that doesn’t meet its brewery’s ‘exacting standards’, called Bad Beer Vodka.
