Exciting new product: Rooster Rojo Ahumado gives Tequila a smoky twist

Fans of agave-based spirits will be delighted to hear about the latest launch from Amber Beverage Group – a smoked variant of Rooster Rojo Tequila.

Rooster Rojo Ahumado Tequila follows hot on the heels of the brand’s successful Rooster Rojo Smoked Pineapple variant, which launched last year.

While Rooster Rojo’s Tequilas are usually bottled at 38% ABV, the new Ahumado expression sits slightly higher at 40% ABV to allow its complex tasting notes to shine.

Drinkers can expect to enjoy aromas of smoked wood, leather and roasted agave. Take a sip, and flavours of agave and spices complement each other, leading to a warm and smoky, soft finish.

As always, drinkers are encouraged to ‘sip, don’t slam’ in order to truly savour the taste of Rooster Rojo Ahumado.

“Rooster Rojo Ahumado is an extraordinary drink, which has the best features of mezcal but at the same time is rather gentle, smooth and highly drinkable as a sipping Tequila,” enthused Mantas Zlatkus, global brand director of Rooster Rojo Tequila.

“Ahumado is what I would call a ‘democratic liquid’ in that it will appeal to a wide range of Tequila lovers.

“Its main advantages are that it captures the growing trend for smoky taste notes, just as our Smoked Pineapple Tequila does, and that it can be sipped neat. It also lends itself to any traditional mezcal or Tequila cocktail.”

Rooster Rojo Ahumado Tequila is a reposado expression made by roasting agave in an artisanal underground over for 48 hours, using stones heated with mesquite firewood.

The Blue Weber agave is cut, then covered with dried agave fibre, and the oven door is sealed with moistened earth.

Then, the producers balance the roasted agave with traditionally cooked agave, before it is fermented and distilled twice.

The liquid is filled into barrels, where it matures for a minimum of two months. The Tequila is then brought to the desired ABV using water that has been filtered through Mexican silver.

So how should consumers drink Ahumado for maximum enjoyment? The Tequila is recommended served neat, at room temperature (around 20oC), or with one ice cube. It also makes a delicious twist on a classic Margarita, or in a Smoky Mango cocktail. UK consumers will be able to find Rooster Rojo Ahumado for RRP £30 (US$34) in the UK.
