Double Dutch reveals scholarship graduates

Mixer producer Double Dutch has unveiled the ‘bartending talent of the future’ with eight scholars graduating from this year’s Female Bartending Scholarship Programme.

The graduates have already unlocked new career opportunities following the 12-week programme

The eight scholars, made up of bartending newcomers and inspiring mixologists, have now completed the 12-week programme, which was launched by Double Dutch twin founders, Joyce and Raissa de Haas in 2021.

Now in its second year, the programme covered topics including personal branding, signature serves and flavour pairings, and amplifying social media and photography, with the sessions delivered by key hospitality experts.

Joyce de Haas added: “The scholarship is a passion project of ours, as we feel so strongly and believe in the development of female talent. We feel honoured to be in a position where we can make it happen and support more females in bartending.”

Scholars were also able to access professional development and coaching advice, as well as listen to panels on uplifting women in drinks from the guest mentors, including Anna Sebastian, hospitality consultant and founder of Celebrate Her; Ellie Webb, founder of Caleño; Alia Jamal, founder of communications agency Doubleshot; Robyn Evans, group bars manager of Hacha; Emma Stokes, otherwise known as ‘Gin Monkey’ and founder of World Gin Day; and the Double Dutch founders, among others.

Unlocking opportunities

Double Dutch’s scholarship aims to elevate and educate women in hospitality by unlocking new career opportunities and helping to further their progression within the industry.

The sisters are aiming to change the statistic that only 5% of females in hospitality are appointed to the top job of CEO.

The eight scholars comprised: Priya Shah, Iona Duffy of Mother Mercy; Kimberly Bilonda-Simon; Amy Warne of The Botanist in Lincoln; Rebecca Bird from Bird at the Bar; Frankie Foley of the Oakman Group; Holly Bennetts from The Greenbank Hotel; and Carys Butler of Revolution in Bath.

The programme was launched by Double Dutch twin founders, Joyce and Raissa de Haas, in 2021

As a result of the programme, the scholars have gained promotions at work, expanded their industry network, enhanced their drinks knowledge, as well as building up their confidence.

The success from the last two years means the Female Bartending Scholarship will return for a third year in 2023.

Raissa de Haas commented: “We had such great feedback from the first year of running the programme that we wanted to continue the scholarship, and keep adding real value to up-and-coming bartender talent.

“Getting to know our scholars has been amazing, and the content our mentors put together has been brilliant. We’re looking forward to seeing how our scholars grow and flourish in their careers.”
