Gyre & Gimble launches paper bottle edition

UK-based gin producer Gyre & Gimble has partnered with wine retailer Naked Wines to introduce an exclusive paper bottle edition of its Coastal Gin.

Coastal Gin is distilled using locally foraged samphire and lavender

The new packaging is made out of 94% recycled paper, is 100% recyclable and five times lighter than a normal glass bottle.

The bottles are manufactured only 40 miles away from both Nolfolk-based businesses, reducing the carbon footprint to six times smaller than a traditional glass bottle.

Craig Allison, co-founder at Gyre & Gimble, commented: “We’ve always wanted to prioritise ethical, sustainable production and this partnership with Naked is a massive step for us towards that goal.

“Changing consumer behaviour is a real challenge for a small independent business like ours, but with the support of an industry heavyweight like Naked onboard, we can reach a lot more people.”

The new paper bottle fits with Naked Wine’s continued investment in sustainability and its drive to reduce carbon emissions. It follows the announcement that by the end of 2022, more than 20% of Naked’s wine bottles will be lighter in weight.

Matt Smith, buying director at Naked Wines, said: “When I first met the Gyre & Gimble founders, Craig and Rory, one thing that immediately stood out was that they’re just as passionate about the environment as we are. Gyre & Gimble is our local distillery and we share a sustainable ethos. I was blown away by the quality and style of the gin and knew we had a chance to do something really special together.

“Up until now, all the guys’ gins have been in traditional glass bottles shipped from Italy, and while recyclable, it can be quite an energy-intensive process and not great for carbon emissions. So for their Naked debut we’ve collaborated to create our very first product in a paper bottle.”

Gyre & Gimble joins a line-up of more than 170 independent producers creating wines and spirits exclusively for Naked’s Angel members.

With a unique business model, Naked is a hybrid of online shop and social network with community groups. Each product has its own wall where customers can ask questions, leave reviews and chat to independent producers directly.

Inspired by the Norfolk coastline, Coastal Gin has been distilled using locally foraged samphire and lavender.

Gyre & Gimble Coastal Gin in a paper bottle is now available at nakedwines.com. The Angel member price is £26.99 (US$32.21).

In the interest of sustainability, many brands have begun turning to paper bottles, including Johnnie Walker, Avallen, and Silent Pool Distillers.
