Zero Waste Cocktails: Flor de Caña hopes to inspire the on-trade to be more sustainable

The Fair Trade-certified and carbon-neutral brand is relaunching its ‘Zero Waste Cocktails’ initiative for 2022.

The project will see Flor de Caña collaborate with eco-conscious bars, restaurants and consumers globally to create sustainable rum cocktails. Each drink will incorporate ingredients derived from repurposed food scraps or leftovers from local communities.

The sustainable cocktails will be available across Europe from May to July. The campaign will be celebrated on social media to raise awareness of the importance of reducing food waste, and in the hope of inspiring consumers to work towards a greener future one cocktail at a time.

In 2021, Zero Waste Cocktails exceeded its target to cut food waste by nine tonnes, and successfully reduced global food waste by 10.4 tonnes thanks to the help of more than 400 bars and restaurants, spanning 22 countries.

Champion of sustainability

In further pursuit of its commitment to being green, the Nicaraguan rum brand has also teamed up with the Sustainability Restaurant Association (SRA), a global non-profit organisation, which champions sustainability in the foodservice industry.

The SRA will offer participating venues a practical ‘sustainable bar handbook’ and sustainability masterclasses with industry leaders as part of its involvement with the Zero Waste Cocktails initiative.

Juliane Caillouette-Nobel, managing director of the SRA, said: “We’re proud to continue in partnership with Flor de Caña on the Zero Waste Cocktails campaign, which excites and engages thousands of bar staff and customers globally on an issue of huge importance.”

Flor de Caña has been a long-time supporter of more sustainable ways of working. The brand’s distillery in Nicaragua is run entirely on renewable energy.

Flor de Caña’s heritage can be followed back to 1890, when an Italian adventurer built a distillery at the foot of Nicaragua’s tallest active volcano: San Cristóbal.

To celebrate Earth Month in April this year, Flor de Caña also embarked upon a year-long, global reforestation campaign as part of its ambition to plant one million trees by 2025.
