The Fair Trade and carbon neutral-certified rum has been a long-standing champion of sustainability – and its latest campaign is no exception. Working with retailers, bars, restaurants and consumers, the Nicaraguan rum hopes to create a greener environment for future generations.

Titled ‘Together for a Greener Future’, the initiative is part of Flor de Caña’s pledge to plant one million trees by 2025. Backed by environmental charity One Tree Planted, the brand has already planted more than 800,000 trees since 2005.

This year, Flor de Caña is on track to plant a staggering 70,000 additional trees with the help of the ‘Together for a Greener Future’ campaign.

Matt Hill, founder and chief environmental evangelist at One Tree Planted, said: “One Tree Planted is proud to continue our partnership with Flor de Caña, who have supported reforestation projects through unique fundraising campaigns over the years.

“As the trees grow, they’ll restore soil stability and health, improve water filtration and absorption, mitigate the effects of climate change, improve biodiversity and provide a host of benefits to the local communities.”

‘Deeply committed’ to sustainability

Social media will play a key role in elevating the campaign. Flor de Caña will use the hashtag #TogetherForAGreenerFuture to help inform readers about why reforestation is necessary, and to provide further details about tree-planting events worldwide throughout the year.

Activations at points of sale will also be crucial to helping Flor de Caña achieve its green targets.

Rum fans will also be able to support Flor de Caña’s reforestation work by donating through the brand’s fundraising page with One Tree Planted. For every US$1 donated, a tree is planted.

Mauricio Solórzano, global ambassador for Flor de Caña, added: “As a global leader of sustainability practices within the spirits industry, we are deeply committed to the protection and preservation of the environment.

“Through our partnership with One Tree Planted, we’re taking our commitment to the environment to the next level and working together to inspire people around the world to get involved in our effort to restore forests and ensure a greener future for generations to come.”

Historic brand

Flor de Caña can trace its roots back to 1890, when a young Italian adventurer chose to build a distillery at the foot of Nicaragua’s tallest and most active volcano: San Cristóbal.

The company is now owned by the fifth-generation family, who oversee the entire production process, from field to bottle.

The Flor de Caña distillery prides itself on being entirely powered by renewable energy. Plus, its award-winning rums are matured for up to 30 years in Bourbon barrels and bottled without artificial ingredients or added sugar.
